Moving and still have 14 months left on Rogers contract

I am going to be moving in Mid August and I called Rogers to cancel my account as I am going back to the States.

They told me I'll be charged $212 for early termination along with a $30 fee and taxes as my contract doesn't expire till October 2013.

They told me that I won't be charged these fees if I can find someone to take over my plan. It's a corporate plan and comes with 6 gbs of data and 200 anytime minutes and I pay roughly $56 a month for it.

I was just wondering if there is a link on this website I can go to where I can find someone interested in taking over my contract so I can avoid those fees.

    Thanks in advance!

Interested parties will likely contact you just based on your above post.

Are you sure you can't make them waive the fees by sending them, say, an American utility bill to prove that you actually moved?

If you are moving to a place that Rogers has no service or to the states. Rogers should let you cancel with no fee I would call back or get in contact with the social media team

    Reveries3,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Wouldn't Rogers not care that I am moving back to the states as I signed a 3 year contract knowing that i would be charged the ECF if terminating it before the end of the term?

    Habs_fan,

Is there such a provision? I wasn't aware of anything like that, but it'd be great if I can get out of paying the fees by showing them proof.

I'll definitely call back if you think it'll work. The only reason I am skeptic it might not is because I told them I am moving back to the states and they still told me I would be charged the ECF. But then again I don't see why Rogers would simply wave it without me putting up a fight.

You can post your plan for takeover under BST forum. They have a special forum for plans only.

It doesn't matter how much time you have left... If Rogers can't provide you with service then they cancel with no fees. They did that when I moved to an area where they couldn't provide me with my cable or Internet. Social media team will help you or get in contact with the office of the President

Rogers will only waive ECFs if you move somewhere within Canada without coverage. You get charged the ECF if you move out of the country.

    Well that kind of sucks.

Would somebody else even be allowed to take over this plan, considering it's corporate?

Not without proof of employment. Negotiate a regular retention plan and transfer that.

Firstly understand that no matter what the facts are or what the laws are, Rogers will always try whatever will get the most money out of your pocket. You may need to dig around to figure out if they are actually entitled to this. That said, what folks here are saying is true, US probably does not count.

Best chance would be to advertise on Kijiji, people are doing that all the time. Don't forget that there is a difference between a contract and a plan. People often advertise their plan but this may mean very little. When I took over a plan for Telus phone, what I found out was that it's really only the contract they care about, the plan can often be changed. So it's possible that the contract itself is unrelated to the plan, and somebody could take over the contract and start a different plan (a non-corporate one).

When you try to get the details from Rogers, you will find that the CSR are generally dumb as a bag of hammers. Ask for manager right away and find out the details. If they insist it has to stay corporate, you could still advertise and just give the conditions require to qualify and you may still get people interested. Depending on how much the phone is worth to you, saying the phone is free is with takeover of plan usually sells quickly.

IMO WordIRC suggestion is probably just going to cause you more trouble. For a new plan, Rogers will surely want you to sign up for a further 3-years. For this to work you better get the best plan known to mankind and make sure you can transfer this to a new user before the fact, because nobody is going to see much value in getting a used phone with a 3-year plan when they can just as easily get a brand new one from the store for free or no cost, with a 3-year contract.

Or if you are in MILITARY and going on leave. Does not matter to them, as they take it to the letter as a signed contract

Is this something they are force to do by law, out of curiosity, or just their policy? I have a hard time believing that, given the choice, Rogers would stop billing somebody just because they can't provide the product.

This is a policy, not a law. Yep, good deed!
