Don't talk to VZW until you call PPC & port. If you cancel VZW 1st you lose your phone #.

Being totally new to the prepaid market... been tryin to decide on Tracfone of PP for 3 Verizon cells in the family, and someone suggested I buy a phone used from Ebay, such as the Motorola Droid X for example, activate on PP with my existing Verizon cell#.
I found one and can't post link to it (since I am new to this forum).... it's supposedly a clean ESN... I cut and pasted some of the info, as I wanted to make sure I'm not missing any details:
Motorola Droid X - 8GB - Black (Verizon) Smartphone USED * CLEAN ESN FUNCTIONAL

I've never done this before, but after I buy this from Ebay, how many steps are needed to port my existing Verizon cell# over, and activate this on Page Plus?
Thanks.

Supposedly clean ESN?
Make sure. They should give you the ESN if it's legit.
Then check it on checkesnfreedotcom
If you already have Verizon phones, you could put them on Page Plus if you want. Just make sure they're off contract first, or you'll have to pay Verizon an early termination fee (ETF).
I bought my x from cowboom.com for $80, they now have them on sale for $70. Cowboom is an online outlet of best buy. 30 day money back guarantee, had no problem activating it on page plus. Since it's a verizon branded phone everything works as soon as you activate.

In terms of steps required, after you receive the phone (with the clean ESN verified) just call PP (or use a dealer listed on this site) and provide them the ESN and your phone number/carrier account that you wish to port. You will be given time frame & instructions to complete the activation (usually just dialing *228 on the phone) when the port is complete. It is pretty close to a one step operation assuming you have a clean phone along with your current phone account information.
Are the three current Verizon phones on separate accounts or under a family plan? If under a family plan, you will need to port the 2nd and 3rd lines before you port the primary line. Contact Verizon to find out which line is the primary one. If all three are separate accounts, you can port in any order.
Good point! It is 1 bill for all 3 of us, and we're on a family plan. My wife's phone is the main#, so she'll be the last to port. My daughter has a slider phone she's still very happy with and there's no reason to change it, so she may be the guinea pig and we'll try to port her over to PP this week if finally decide on PP.
Thanks for everyone's good advice here.
Thanks for that link, as it seems they have a lot of good used items to buy.
At first glance, they don't specify "clean ESNs" in their product descriptions when I checked a few phones out... should I still worry about this, or is it more of a concern when buying phones off Ebay?
On another note... I see they have the HTC Droid Incredible 8GB going for $60.00... decisions, decisions.
Mine worked right away and on another forum several ppl have bought from them with no problems. But if the phone won't activate just send it back you'll only lose time.

This might topic of another thread.... but my last painful step here would be to figure out how to xfer our phone# lists from our ancient phones (my LG flip, wife's Palm Centro), over to either a Motorola X, or HTC Droid Incredible... either way, we'd get an Android. I hope it's was easy as saving the phone/contacts lists to a .VCF format, to xfer to these newer phones.
Sorry can't help you there, when I moved from a feature phone to a smart phone I had to reinput everything. Now all my contacts are saved in my google account so when switching phones I can just upload from there.

I actually had to deal with the same problem. Its that easy. Just save as vcf and transfer. Once you get to android, you can choose to sync all your phone numbers with your google account and never have to worry about that again. Just dont forget your account info.
My old LG from years ago was a real pain & I wound up just re-entering everything. The ENV line was a little more flexible but not great. This time around I had everything in Outlook and that was very easy. There are some sync programs out there for your PC that are worth looking into - if not for this time but maybe for next. Here's one that works pretty well. It's PC-based but puts a small client on your Android.

+2 on the Droid X from Cowboom. I think mine was rated a 6 for condition. It arrived in almost perfect condition- one tiny nick on the frame by the screen near the up volume button, maybe one small scuff on the frame. The screen is perfect (Gorilla Glass?). Easy, painless activation... calls in and out, texting in and out, MMS and 3G data all just automatically worked after I dialed *22890 after switching from my previous phone. Good deal for $85... why on earth did I drop $250 on a used Droid 1 about 2 years ago??!
