I haven't used Rogers 3G in a very long time, but if this is true now, then it's a perfect sign that Rogers needs to drop 2G and allocate all that spectrum to 3G or 4G or 5G or whatever they're calling their network these days.

T-Mobile USA is dropping their 2G over the next 5 years, and I'm surprised Rogers hasn't announced similar plans. Can you still buy NEW devices that don't support UMTS?

There's probably lots of devices still on 2G on their network + roaming devices that don't support 3G including those of WIND/Mobilicity. Only expect Rogers to copy AT&T and not T-Mobile

Rogers still sells 2G devices like the Blackberry Curve 8520, I doubt that they have plans to shut down 2G in the immediate

They will still run it for a Max 3-5 years. Till 2G is obsolete.

I'd say it already is obsolete.

For now, let's consider EDGE as a "2G" technology. UMTS was "launched" (i.e. the spec was finalized and networks were free to use it) in 2000. HSDPA in 2002. HSUPA in 2004. HSPA+ in 2007. LTE in 2009. LTE Advanced in 2011.

There are 6 newer technologies than EDGE. None of them have any dependency on the "2G" network. The oldest of these is over 12 years old.

LTE Advanced is more than 1000 times faster than EDGE. HSPA+ is 100 times faster.

UTMS has been available on Rogers since 2006 I believe. I can't see the Curve 8520 on their website. I do see one device that appears to not support UMTS, but how easy would it be to just discontinue that?

You can get really nice devices for $0 on a three year contract. So if they stopped selling devices without UMTS today, they could turn off their 2G network in 3 years without having to force customers to spend any more money.

The only issue I see is roaming, but how much money do they make from roaming? How does that compare to the expense of buying new spectrum for LTE, rather than reusing spectrum they already have?

And if they didn't need new spectrum, it would allow WIND to get some cheaper...

At $4 /MB it does't take very long. I asked them to lower it to the preferred rate of $1 but they wanted the quick revenue hit so they kissed 4 subs goodbye.

At this point they don't have to shut the network down.
They're not gasping for spectrum like AT&T and T-Mobile.

Unless Rogers's 2G network starts becoming a nuisance to run - I see no reason to shut it down.

Bell still hasn't shut down their core network and the only device I can think of still using it is the Palm Pre and an old BlackBerry.
(whilst on the topic of CDMA, Bell's CDMA network is terrible - constantly falling back to 1xRTT)

    Rogers is Running 3 Networks.
Quality - Below Average to OK.

Bellus is running 5 Networks. (calling the 42mbps a different network)
Quality - OK to Above Average

    WIND is running 1 Network.
    Quality - Terrible to OK.

    The only difference is age.
    Nevermind Bell.. LTE is fine.

I ask my self the same about you, your very limited scope on topics here lead me to really beg you to share a single thought, yet.
    Maybe one this year? Please?

You're still not funny too much either.

I assume you're trying to be funny too, because your posts read as a desperate attempt at some schtick you're trying to play off around here.
