Thoughts on this phone? Very customizable?

You can customize a lot ... overclock for better speed... you can get cyanogenmod etc ...
for this price and if you don't are a power user this is a good phone ...
for the double of the price you can get a xperia ray at futureshop for 149 $ ... this phone have ics and a great camera on it
Best RF of any HSPA phone yet on Telus. If they would just get more MOTO's, they might sell androids outside of a city.
if you want the latest and greatest on the app stuff, no. But for 80 bucks it's pretty sweet if you have limited needs there.
I got a refurbished Motorola Milestone from Telus, it's a great beginner android, and I'm sure it was great for it's time. But even after overclocking it, it was still unbearably slow. Ended up sending it back to get a refund because it just wasn't worth keeping. Too bad really, I liked the keyboard, but if you've used any recent phone (android, iPhone, etc.) you will likely find this phone too slow.
What the other folks are saying is true regarding performance ,etc. As well as the RF reception. It outdoes my new Galaxy Note.
I haven't modded mine though. However, the phone is very solidly built. Mine is full of scratches and has been dropped many times. The gorilla glass does scratch though. However, it happened when I laid the phone glass down on a pile of lava rocks ... doh!
Keyboard is great.
The usb connection is starting to get loose, in that some usb connectors have to be moved or wiggled a bit to get the phone to charge. Also the headphone jack is a bit loose too, I have to turn the input jack sometimes to get rid of scratchy sound.
But if you treat it normally, and not as harsh as me, you can't go wrong for $80.
Good luck in your search,
Craig
iphone 3gs too mainstream
I would say the milestone is better than 3g
Iphone 3g and 3gs had average or below average radio reception. The 4 was a huge improvement. (when not in the iphone 4 death grip)
