WP8 is getting baked-in Skype, not sure about 7.8...
Hopefully the carriers won't be able to disable it like tethering or something...

Does anyone know if the Windows Phone 7.8 or 8 is getting WiFi calling?
I've ready some reports that it will be... but I haven't heard anything lately.
Thanks,
tmobiley
T-Mobile. Connecting you when you need it most... disconnecting you when you need to connect with God's beautiful creation! Service is great in cities and highways, but in rural areas they leave you with just your surroundings. I encourage you to get T-Mobile, disconnect for a while!
I am glad that God is not like cell phone coverage. He does not hide behind mountains or loose us down long windy roads. The Lord levels mountains, and He makes our paths straight!

8 also has the api hooks to allow any other voip, uma or whatever type service such as wifi calling to be integrated with the dialer. (Get's them out of anti competitive stance with skype)
Note: I'm a BzzAgent - I get to trystuff
and let people know about it. You can ask me questions about it and I'll give honest feedback not advertising fluff...

That's good to know. What about GroupMe Messaging... when will that become a feature?
I've downloaded both Skype and GroupMe as apps for now on my Lumia 710.
The only other thing I wish this had was a front-facing camera... but I'm glad it does have internet sharing now! Thank you Windows 7.8 - I've use Windows Mobile, TouchWhiz, iOS, Android, and Palm... I have say I like Windows Phone the best out of any of the OS/UIs I've ever used.
Who needs "Windows Phone"? LOL!
Microsoft is still there ? it dies with Nokia ....
I have use iOS, Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and TouchWhiz... I am not using a Lumia 710 and like it much better than any of the other alternatives.
Getting back on topic... my thought is that WiFi calling won't be included because it would compete with Skype - and in Windows Phone 8, I hear that Skype is going to be a built-in feature (instead of an app); that raises the question of when will Microsoft build-in GroupMe as a feature, since they also own that now...
WI-Fi Calling has no conflicts with Skype.
the problem is no one wants Windows Phone, it is dead and failed product .
Microsoft is over
the problem is that Microsoft never got something right!
Did you notice that Microsoft gives up the brand name of "Metro interface",
it never can fly , only falls.
everyone knows it died, only steve ballmer thinks it alive
Several users on this android WiFi calling thread are saying the HTC Radar has it: http://slickdeals.net/f/4939846?page=6
I doubt they're actually using Tmobile WiFi calling on the WP7, but you see how complicated this whole thing can be to explain, as you can find plenty of tmo employees themselves who can't tell you what the difference is between UMA and Android WiFi calling. The android wifi-calling unlimited-minutes addon is supposed to be free again now if you ask, but I can't test it since the wificalling android apk won't work in my CM9-HD2, don't have a real android dumbphone. whatever. the more OS's it's on, the more support it'll get.
I personally don't use WP7, but I know plenty of people for whom WP7 is the only "smartphone" they'll touch, just like there are lots of people who will only touch iCraps.
The more OS's with tmo WiFi calling, the better. We saw UMA in samsungs, nokias, BBs, HTC Shadow WinMo, that's almost every smartphone OS back then save Palm (RIP). Why Tmo never capitalized on this is beyond me, i've been asking this question since the very beginning.
Isn't metrosxl the latest politically correct way of saying the dude likes other dudes? Maybe that was MS's subtle joke of trying to make the iWphone7 appeal to the iCrap sheep, but I digress, no offense.

UMA never really got the support. So it has 'become' wifi calling (without handoff) using the UMA protocols. (see http://www.smart-wi-fi.com/index.php ) VoIP clients and skype already exist for 7.5 but because of the limits on what apps can do, cannot really support incoming calls. All this changes in 8. The OS now has api hooks for alternate voice services. Skype will be using them and so can any other 3rd party service. This means it should be straight forward for a wifi calling app to be added but no one has actually commited to it.
