Cancelling Rogers contract, any tips on reducing or getting out of ECF?

Have 12 months to go and they're asking for $400. Want to move over to Bell for a cheaper plan and better phone, but they're only offering $200 credit.

Your location says Toronto, Ontario is in the middle of considering a bill to cap prince gouging, including language limiting the amount a carrier can charge for cancellation during a contract. As you can see, the bill is in its second reading.

Here is the process for Ontario bills (see page 7)

Unfortunately I doubt it will apply to current contracts, but only those going forward. The reason I bring it up is that if you are not in a rush, maybe you should wait until the act is passed and then it would apply to your new contract with Bell and put you in a better position down the road.

Double check your TOS and verify that the formula for calculating ECF is correct for that amount. Rogers is known to screw these things up or simply lie about them. Do your own research.

Another option is to port out, don't pay your ecf until Rogers' accounts receivable people come calling. At that time, you'd have a good chance to get them to discount the amount by 20 - 30%.

    And potentially destroy your credit?

If you're moving to Bell strictly based on price, have you tried working with Rogers retention to see if they can match the plan for you? Keep in mind, Rogers is not going to give you a break on your ECF so you can prance over to a competitor, unless they've really screwed you over.

I completely agree, OP has built up at least some tenure with Rogers so working with them to build a better plan seems to me to be the best first step. Mind you, the climate is much more difficult now as I understand it so it will probably require lots of pushing.

Are you signing up for Bell as a new customer? If so, I'm surprised that you say they are offering you a better plan since to be honest, I don't think Bell's consumer rate plans are that good at all. The only reasons to leave would be if you truly are getting something that you can't negociate with Rogers (i.e. you're taking over somebody else's line), you want to be on the Bellus network rather than the Rogers one, or you don't like Rogers as a company and prefer Bell.

Bell's retail consumer offerings are better than Rogers' retail consumer offerings.

There's no way you can reduce your ECF, plain and simple. What you should do is contact Rogers, tell them that you're looking at moving to Bell, and what the plan includes. Most likely there is a similar plan available at Rogers. If the CSR can't help you, ask for retention, they can do far more than any CSR can do for you.

Don't do the port out, it will only hurt your credit, and is it really worth that?

Could always see if you can talk your way into a renewal without HUP. That would solve your ECF issue.
Unlocked iPhone 5, unlocked iPhone 4
Unlimited airtime, Unlimited CAN/US long distance, Unlimited SMS to CAN/US wireless numbers
2500 Call Forwarding minutes to CAN/US numbers
    CiD, 6GB
Google Voice for visual voice mail with message transcription, conditional greetings, unlimited messages (vs 35 message cap), remote retrieval from any PC or phone, no auto-purge after 10 days and most importantly no $7-$8 charge.
    $53

The CSRs are pretty cagey about that now. In the beginning, when the new ecf rules first went into effect, you could sneak one by them. Unless you luck out and get a probie CSR.

However, what you may want to try is tell them you broke your phone, and need a replacement. Ask for the cheapest phone, which I think is the BB Curve 9300, with Econ Inducement of $99. Do a 2-year (or 3-yr) renewal, and effectively reduce your ecf from $400 down to $99 + $12.50. I did that recently when I thought I might port out. ( I ended up staying when they gave me what I wanted on the 6GB plan).

It's a corporate plan, $10/month cheaper with more included, including 6GB/month over 1GB/month, as well as getting a new phone (Galaxy S3 over BB9700).

You could transfer your cellphone plan to someone else for smaller incentive, but you will lose your phone number.
400$ seems a little steep for 12 months left, weird.

Not necessarily. I took over a guy's contract, he kept his number and I kept mine. It was a lot of trouble but it is doable.

Unfortunately, Rogers, in their infinite wisdom, has begun auditing the number swapping procedure. I took advantage of this as well, but it seems the party is over.

I took over a Telus contract. I have no doubt Rogers trying to accomplish the same thing would involve a bunch of nightmarish problems, lying and general incompetence.

The guy giving me his contract was actually switching to Rogers - poor *******. We met at the Telus store and called Telus CSR. They gave me a temporary account first, and I gave my info. The other guy then got a Rogers Sim from store down the hall, called Rogers and ported out. I was then given a new number on the Telus account, and next day ported my Virgin number to the account, ditching the other one. It took agreement from Telus beforehand because the account had to be actually cancelled then re-activated. On bill the ECF showed up as charged then credited.
