I tried GrooVe IP on a previous Android phone, and it was okay. But I think I'm going to try Talkatone this time around. Seems to get better marks.

The problem with GrooveIP is that it interfaces directly with Google Voice, and therefore only supports g711, which cannot tolerate any packet loss or jitter (packets arriving out of order).
With Talkatone, you're actually connect to their servers, which in turn are making the connection to Google Voice. As a result of this, a different codec can be used between your phone and Talkatone's servers. I'm not sure what the codec is, but I'm imagining it's a form of speex or ilbc, codecs that can tolerate a wireless/cellular connection.

I've installed Talkatone now and have used it on a couple of test calls (since I use Google Voice without the app). It already seems better than GrooVe IP in that I haven't had to make any configuration adjustments to get a clean call via Wi-Fi. Looks like a keeper for me.
Talkatone is the best one here because for all other application , you need to pay . But I used GrooveIP for me when I was in London and that worked great.
Here is a short info for iLBC:
The iLBC is suitable for robust voice communication over IP, streaming audio, archival and messaging. The algorithm is a version of block-independent linear predictive coding, with the choice of data frame lengths of 20 and 30 milliseconds. The encoded blocks have to be encapsulated in a suitable protocol for transport, usually the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).

Is talkatone premium necessary/worth it? I used Groove IP but have had no luck getting a clear connection over 4g so I'm switching to talkatone.
When I use talkatone I hear static over everything that the other person says. On their end they hear their own voice echoing a bit. Has anyone had these issues and fixed them? I have tried experimenting with the different settings but I havent found anything that works. Doing the free trial of the premium version didn't help either.
I haven't used either product (GrooVe IP or Talkatone) enough to say I've got it optimized, and my use has been all over Wi-Fi, but Talkatone has been better for me. There's quite a bit of configuration that can be done to tweak both of these. I don't think the paid versions really offer much more, except that they're ad-free. You do have to have a very solid, stable data connection for it to work its best, though, from everything I've read about it.
I have used Talkatone in an Edge area and it worked fine. When I am in a 4G/3G area I use GrooveIP but I could also use Talkatone. Talkatone has ads and goes through their proxy servers to make a connection with Google Voice. GrooveIP connects directly. There is also a new beta of Groove IP that is supposed to eliminate the voice lag that sometimes occurs.

Does TMo have any restriction on using VoIP? I want to get the 5GB+100min plan again, and 100min may not be enough. I'm thinking of installing a softphone app to use with my voip.ms account, it's not free but should let me answer my Canadian voip.ms numbers directly.
Something like Vonage Mobile might work for outgoing with 3000min to US/C/PR but can I set my own caller ID to be displayed?
The reason for my first question is because I hadn't realized TMo charged for tethering, my Telus account simply includes it (and promotes it).
Thanks!
