    Best VoIP Apps

    There's no restrictions on VOIP.

Charging for tethering is standard practice in US up until recently when Verizon/AT&T introduced share everything (or mobile share) plans that charge some $15/GB.

Thanks for the confirmation. I do see the logic of charging for tethering (more people will use more of their allowance if they tether) I'm just not used to something being free here. OTOH I would prefer to pay $10-$15/mo to be able to _share_ my Telus data so there's always a tradeoff.

I take it TMo would catch me tethering even if they phone's not theirs, because the SIM (and the network use) is theirs?

Assuming a Vonage Mobile (3000min out) or similar, what solution do you guys use for incoming? Always GV? I'm thinking of my voip.ms account on a softphone for incoming (Canadian #s but not free airtime) and Vonage for out, but could I set my caller ID to any arbitrary number? I did ask Vonage but don't know if they'll answer.

    Thanks!

That standard handshake is for Vonage to send the number a text. However, if that doesn't work (say you're trying to set it up for your GV number or other), it will give you the option of calling the number with a 6 digit pin to enter into the app.

Thanks for the pointer. I downloaded and set up Vonage Mobile today, started with my actual mobile number and changed to my landline number. Made a call from Vonage Mobile and it went through, but the caller ID said "Unavailable". Should that have been the number I set in VM app? I'd have thought so but it's not labelled "Caller ID" in the app.

Nope I used Talkatone a few times but my phone doesn't have 1700 and my area hasn't been refarmed so I could only speak for Edge. The only thing they really seem to block is tethering.

I installed the Vonage Mobile app and by default it was set to my cell number. I changed it to my landline (using the "please call me" validation) but when I make a call with it, the caller ID comes up as "Unknown" or something.

Is this in any way normal behaviour? I'm hoping to use it with a TMo 5GB+100min plan but right now it's on Telus postpaid.

BTW I wrote to Vonage tech support and got a 100% useless reply. Hoping to avoid doing that again.

    Thanks!

    Re: Best VoIP Apps

Thanks i may do that when i switch to TMo but talkatone works with google voice which isn't officially available in Canada yet? I think, i do have a gv number in the US.

Also if vonage mobile should work, i want to make it work.

    Thanks!

Did you ever get Vonage to display your wireless number for Caller ID? I'm also looking for a VOIP solution that will display my current number: too many people I know simply won't answer, if they don't recognize the number (me included).

No, and in fact I tried to change it back to my actual cell # (in case I was doing something wrong) but now I get an error "registering my account" and please call to talk to an agent. Will have to try again later when I have more time.

I'm also looking at softphones to use with my voip.ms account (not free but 1c/min is close to it). I like the look of Zoiper though haven't tested changing the caller ID on it (have 3 voip.ms numbers and might change based on whom I'm calling so they see a local number).

Agreed! And I'm one of those odd ducks who actually believes in paying for something of value. Line2 is well worth the $10 per month and I think if you sign up for a year it works out even cheaper.
