Sad to hear of your issues. So far, we are pleasantly surprised with our SDC units. However, I do agree, they are NOT Nextel. If users expect from the get go that this is not iDEN, they will not be disappointed.

So, after having two wonderful Nextel lines (in addition to two Sprint lines), I migrated my Nextels over to Sprint earlier this year. I found that the SDC service to be a lot less . . . robust . . . than the Nextel service I was used to, so I gave up on DC altogether and was stuck with two phone lines that I'll never use (my fault - I went past the grace period while testing SDC).
Two days ago, I decided to reactivate SDC on those unused phones (that already had voice/data service). I wanted to try out SDC while roaming, since that update was finally pushed to the Admiral. Three customer service reps from Sprint (OK, one online chat and two live people on phone calls) were not able to get SDC working on these two lines where it had worked in the past. The last CSR who attempted to help me was awesome, but still unable to get either handset provisioned properly.
I told her that at this time, I think I had my answer to how SDC was going to work and asked her to remove it from both lines since it wasn't working anyway. A total of about 90 minutes of my time I'll never get back again just because I wanted to see if SDC was 'worthy'.
I know many people are loving SDC (and if it would have worked on this go-around, I probably would have too), I just hope the difficulties I experienced are not the new 'norm'.
Venting . . . Done.

“Right now, I’m glad we have the iDEN network,” Hesse said. “I wouldn’t have said that 18 months ago, but I am now ... from a financial perspective.”
NEXTEL. Done. I guess that's "Life at SprintSpeed"

We honor his memory.
Thanks for the sympathy! I'll get over it and probably try again late this fall. It's got to get better eventually.
