S3 Tethering with ATT - rooted?

I am thinking of upgrading our phones and am making one last consideration with ATT. If I wanted to tether an S3, is it required or even better to be rooted? I have no problem rooting, just curious. Was just at the local store and he said tethering wasn't allowed (which I understand) but said it was possible if rooted. But he tried hard to scare me away from rooting - it'll brick your phone. I was considering using the Foxfi app for tethering, in case you needed to know that.

You don't need root for foxfi, but I would also dl foxfi addon to help hide tethering from att
