    Calling Overseas 011; alternatives?

I've been using yakcell for a long time to call overseas. It requires me to dial a local access number upon which I hear a dial tone. Then it takes a while before it would ring and connect me.

Sometimes it doesn't connect or it just dead airs or I get fast busy signal. Today I got a recording (in language of the country I'm calling followed by english) that says my calling card has no money. My guess is that Yakcell uses some form of prepaid calling card to connect the calls?

Anyways, long story short, what are our options on Telus Mobility for overseas calling? I am aware of free apps like Viber and Skype but I am looking for something that doesn't require me or the other person to have an app to dial... And I want something with cheap rates (like Google Voice). On Fido I know they used to extend overseas rates from Yak or Primus or something to their subscribers for direct dialing.

What choices do we have on Telus aside from Yak Cell?

For direct dial you have no choice. Telus is your only option.

For calling card or local access number systems you have plenty of options along with yak.

For apps that integrate with the phone it will depend on what operating system the phone uses. In android many apps can take over from the native dialer. I use csipsimple in Android to connect with a sip provider (not exactly easy to setup).

We think everyone should be able to afford a wireless phone. That's why we were the first wireless company in North America to offer pay-by-the-second airtime, and why we don't charge an activation fee. NO scary contract to sign. Immediate national coverage. And a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Yes, it's finally time to get a wireless phone.

There are a ton of 'calling card' type services with decent rates.

I use a voip service called VoipBuster. The rates are extremely good. Your options are to call from your computer, or dial in to the service with local access number, or use app on your phone via 3G data. The VoipBuster app is terrible, but the app 'MobileVOIP' logs into a Voipbuster account quite easily and works well. At home I also use a voip converter box I got off ebay which is always logged into my account, and my home handset plugs in and works just like having a landline (pick up the phone, there is a dial tone and you dial). It is dial-out only, no phone number.

You pay by putting 10 or 20 euros onto the account. If you put 10 euros you get free calls for about 4 months to NA and western Europe. Calls after that period, or international calls to other areas get subtracted from the balance. See the rates on their website. We often call India, it's $0.02 (euro cents) per minute. 10 euros normally lasts me 5 months, or about $2/month.

I find this is the cheapest way to get nearly-free service without needing to get everyone I know to download the same software. Usable with my home phone handset, and from anywhere on my iPhone, makes it perfect.

Yes, you do have direct dial choices!
Have a look at localphone.com, it is a UK site with good rates. You add your phone numbers in which get local numbers assigned to them. For instance, if you want to call a France number, you get assigned a Toronto 647 number to call. So when you dial the 647 number it connects with the French number directly. You can change your location let's say to London UK and you get a local London number that connects directly with the French number. It is seamless. You add the 647 number to your Faves and you're good to go.
You also have the choice of using localphone as a calling card around the world. Also with a sip device. You receive a local UK number and an iNum number when you open your localphone account, both for free. You can fwd those lines to you own line.
And many more features. Quality is outstanding. Check it out.
Been using this service for over 2 years.

You can also make money from referrals to the service. I won't do it now as I enjoy helping people out with info for free if I have the knowledge. In case ur wondering.. I do not work for them.

    Goldline Dcall (goldline.net)
    Worldlline.ca
    Keepcalling.ca

All of the above would require you to dial an access phone number first.

Yes, if that's what you need. You can assign as many you want.

With the Localphone app you do not need to get a local number. You can just add the overseas number to the Localphone phone book or dial directly over wifi/3G.
