    Buying a new Android phone

My current phone is the iPhone 3G and it's REALLY getting obsolete, I hate it. Would an Android phone be the smart way to go? I have around $250 at my hand right now and I want to spend as close as possible to that value in buying a new phone.

First off, is the Samsung S3 the best Android phone out right now? Would it be wise if I just save up on my money until I can buy that phone? Or would the Samsung S2 suffice?

I'm not too much of a cellphone addict because I spend most of my money on desktop computer gaming

What other phones can you guys recommend? Is it wise to go with Android?

    Please help me. Thanks.

First question, are you currently eligible for a mobile upgrade ?? If not, a $250 budget would best be used on a used phone because a new Android phone without a contract will be much higher.

I own both a Droid Razr and an iPhone 4 (secondary line on my account) and I prefer the Android hands down.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

What do you exactly mean by "eligible by a mobile upgrade"? Do you mean do I want to upgrade my iPhone 3G to a newer phone? I would be willing to save money first to increase my $250 budget if it is "worth it" to buy a particular Android phone.

I was asking if you are under a contract still and/or eligible for equipment discounts with your provider. That was my question. I don't know how long ago you got your iPhone 3G.

Oh no. This iPhone 3G is already very old, I think around 5 years already so it's not eligible for a mobile upgrade. With that, what do you think is the best thing to do?

If you have had the phone for 5 years, you should be eligible for a discounted device upgrade at the discounted price, unless you used your upgrade on another phone # on your account. You should be able to confirm your eligibility from the At&t internet site or a simple call to customer service. Thank you for clarifying your situation more clearly.

Oh wait, I forgot to tell you I'm from the Philippines and not from the USA so I guess that's what makes the difference. Any suggestions now?

In the Philippines you can go with Globe or Smart as a provider and get a carrier discounted phone. This may not be an option for you if you are using one of the others or are doing prepaid on the big 2. The S2 is a very good phone and will work for your purposes. I don't know how much of a difference in price the S2 vs. S3 is. If not much, then it would be worthwhile to keep saving the money. If it is over $200-$300, I would go with the S2. You may also want to consider the HTC Desire HD. They are still nice phones and you could probably get one for what you have now.

I used my S2 over there early this summer on Smart prepaid and was able to get some nice apps for free direct from Smart. I'm sure that the other Androids will have the same ability.

I'm actually on a plan with Globe but don't know if upgrading my plan to a more expensive one would be practical for me. I only use so much data plan. Hmmm, this is a hard task for me, choosing a phone

Looks like a little over $400 cash out. I would go with the S3. They have lots of plan choices. You may even have one already.

Are there no problems or whatsoever with the S3?

The price will be different in different countries or different contracts.
Anyway, I don't think $250 is enough to buy a galaxy s iii.
I suggest you to go retail shops so that you can get more information what you need.

The price of the S3 for our networks (Globe and Smart) seems still high. Many people here complain that the price does not look like subsidized phone prices just like in the USA. Where in the US can I buy an unlocked S3 in the US at the least expensive price?

I never found prices of unlocked Galaxy S3 or any unlocked phone for that matter to be cheaper in the US than in the Philippines. The only real exception is the Galaxy Nexus at the Google Play store but that is still at $349. The average range for an unlocked Galaxy S3 is about $700 to $899.

For around $200, I would go to Virra Mall or whatever tech mall you can find. The best cheap Samsung for the buck is the Galaxy W aka Galaxy Wonder. The so called Galaxy Y or Galaxy Youth is too low end. The Galaxy Wonder, even though it has a 3.7" screen, has specs equal to better than the original Galaxy S, with a WVGA resolution and a 1.4Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU. That CPU is a lot faster than what you have on the iPhone 3G.
