    International roaming and usage limits

I usually go on international trips maybe 2-3 times a year. I do like to take my phone and use it abroad. I have done so in the past, and have been able to control my bills.

Now the question is, with Telus, do they have a system to artificially set a spending limit, when I visit other countries, so that if I lose my phone, I do not rack up a huge bill?

P.S. I kknow I can buy local prepaid SIMs in other countries. I do that if I am gone for >2 weeks. But for short trips < 1 week, I prefer to use my phone. Also, in some countries like Japan, India etc, you *cannot* buy any SIM without a local ID.

I don't have an answer to your actual question, but have you considered buying an international SIM? You can take that with you even on the shortest trips, they work just about everywhere and the pricing is reasonable.
People seem very happy with eKit or Tru(phone) - I use both and love especially Tru. Personally I'd NEVER roam for even a second with a Canadian carrier, their prices are the worst in the world.

Here is the answer I got, when I wrote to them:

We do not have a "spending limit". If you do lose your phone and report it to us as soon as you know it's missing, we can take care of the charges.
What does "take care" mean? Will they "take care" to make me pay for it or do they have a process? I wont take anything verbal from any of them, anyone can rack up a huge charge and then report a "lost phone" if what they say is true. I am afraid, I am not ready to take their word for it on this one.

Like some people in this thread have been saying, I'd try Truphone (Tru SIM). Ironically, there's also a way to do limit your usage with Tru and with Telus (or other carriers) using an Android app called Onavo. Search for "Onavo Truphone" in Google.

    Me too!

No spending cap as far as I know. I think you block international roaming altogether though (probably not what you're looking for). You do get lots of text message warnings though. Here are the text messages I got for a quick trip down to the US yesterday/today:
