Depends on location though because in my area AT&T has gotten more reliable than vz overall. Both have had their issues though but AT&T has been way more reliable.

I think usc has a rough road ahead but they are hanging in there keeping the debt lower than it could be at this point

"Huh...didn't know Alltell was bought by Verizon! So does that mean UPrepaid is actually a joint Verizon/US Cellular thing? Actually that would probably make some sense, but I do wonder if that's a first tiny step to them being bought out."

Verizon couldn't take over all of Alltel because of anti-competitive reasons. A few hundred thousand subscribers remain as a vastly shrunken Alltel--this company is doing the joint U-Prepaid program.

Do you know anything about the U-prepaid program? I am trying to find out about the Pay-per-day program (either $1 or $2). Is this charged only on days when the phone is used? Are there any minimums (I can't imagine that if a phone is used only once a year the total yearly cost would only be $1 to $2)?

I think I just read yesterday that it takes $1 or $2 a day off your account if you have money in it and are on those plans?

Wish I knew more about it though...I THOUGHT I read somewhere that you can't just pay for a month online through their website?

I am one of those who left Us Cell Q2. I left to go prepaid where I can get what I want a lot cheaper than Us Cell. Also not offering the Bold 9930 did not help their case either......

Parts of Alltel remain separate from Verizon as the fcc doesn't allow a company to have two licenses in the same market so parts of alltel were divested and now exist as Alltel but owned by a southern cable company.

They actually did away with that law, there are now markets where one company holds both the A and B band cellular licenses. I'll try and find the details.

Miami is one example: AT&T owns both A & B

Raleigh/Durham is an example where VZW owns both A & B.

    Verizon's 3G network. ............................................ AT&T's 3G network.

    Verizon's 4G network.

Thanks NewYork, I knew there were a few in the east, but I couldn't recall any. Wait, there is Southeastern Idaho, Verizon holds both the A and B Band licenses there now, it was U.S. Cellular and Commnet Cellular (the old one, not the new company. I had service with them for a couple of years in Pocatello), Commnet went into Airtouch who of course went into Verizon, then USCC sold off their SE Idaho market to Alltel which then went back to Verizon.

The company that now owns the remnants of Alltell still has licenses in southern Idaho for what it is worth. Also last year USCC bought some licenses in Idaho if I can recall.

Maybe Southern Idaho closer to Boise or Mountain Home, but I don't think they do in Southeastern Idaho (Twin Falls area east to Wyoming, south to Nevada and Utah and north to Montana). USCC did buy some licenses there I believe, but I don't think they were in Southeastern Idaho, where USCC's market used to be. On that note, when I worked for USCC here in the Ukiah, CA area back in the late 1990's, we had all of USCC's California, Oregon, Washington, Southeastern Idaho and Hawaii markets as our local area, yep, USCC had Hawaii covered too.

Uprepaid is a joint venture of us cellular and alltel in regional areas. Some areas like here in southern il remained alltel which is a totally different company than old alltel. Alltel is now a regional company and they just lease the alltel name from verizon. Uprepaid does let u pay with credit card online.

Thanks for all that information! Who knows, maybe I'll just end up trying that Uprepaid. US Cellular's network + good prices...

US Cellular has a significant market share in Wisconsin and the best rural coverage by far in much of the southern part of the state. Doesn't make sense they would give that up.
