    Puzzling text from 611

I've had an Iphone 3G account that's been doing nothing other than draining my bank account. I haven't had the need to upgrade the phone but recently wanted to see if AT&T HSPA would work where I live. So I bought an Atrix 4G off ebay and put my SIM in it. An hour after setting up the phone I get a text from AT&T to call 611 and add a compatible 4G plan.

Is the Iphone unlimited plan not compatible with the 4G phones?

    TIA

The message means that the billing system detected that you either have an incompatible data feature or missing a required data feature. An iPhone unlimited data plan was not meant to be used in any other type of phone. There should be no difficulty getting the compatible unlimited data feature (now grandfathered) added to the account after contacting CS. iPhone users who don't have a data feature get the same message when detected. Nothing new.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

I called AT&T and the account rep said she had it, clicked something on my account and lost it. So she went back to the "you can't keep that plan" spiel. I told her to reverse everything and she couldn't, so I'm screwed. She's submitting a case to ask everything to be restored to the way it was.

Beware to those who try to buy a phone off Ebay, CL, etc and think your plan won't get hosed.

Even if you hadn't called, they still could have forced the feature change without speaking with you directly. The Terms & Conditions of Service clearly specify this. Some have avoided such a change for a while but it will happen using a phone with an incorrect data feature. Was different a few years ago, but no longer now that the policy is more strictly enforced.

Maybe but it's just going to lead to a cancellation of service if they do. They've made a crapton of money off me in last few years as I haven't used the line as voice or data, just as a backup. I was considering moving my family plan to AT&T as they have HSPA where I live but this fiasco just ensures I'll cancel.

I understand your desire to leave in light of the latest development, but it won't change anything with At&t. As stated, it can be corrected if you are willing to be patient. Clearly, a rep made a mistake when they deleted the feature from the account but it does take a specialty team to correct it.

Most likely they will fix it, just takes a little time for the right person to do it.

AT&T has an unlimited LTE plan with visual voice mail rate code, ($30). I have it from my grandfathered 3G old iPhone plan now on my Lumia 900. The customer no-service rep probably didn't know what she was doing (not hard to imagine since she works for AT&T). You might need to get your case escalated, but the rate code is indeed there.

I'll take my chances on this...again.
I sold my iPhone 3G after receiving too many text messages from AT&T for using the wrong data plan.

Their strange, yet annoying approach to their data plans defeats the concept behind the SIM card if I can't move my SIM card across multiple devices as I see fit so until you change to 4G/HSPA+ data plan you will not get HSPA+ speeds even if you're inside an HSPA+ market.

If you want certain features to work on a 4G phone, including visual voicemail, you must have your plan changed to the LTE plan if you are using an LTE capable phone. It doesn't matter that your not in an LTE market. Silly, perhaps, but that's the AT&T way.

So the lady told me before submitting a case she was putting a 2GB data plan on and giving me a credit. Apparently she didn't do that as online I show no data plan and the SIM doesn't work for data in either the Iphone or the Atrix. Tonight I was supposed to receive a call from her to let me know things were back to the original. No call, no data and I'm not happy. Guess I'll have to raise holy hell tomorrow.

    Appreciate the info here!

Will be interested to see if this happens. If not, I'm gone but if they do I'm likely bringing the other line over.

You'd think a smartphone data plan would be a smartphone data plan. That's how Verizon handles it and I'm sure the others do as well.

Wanted to give this thread closure. I called in and spoke to an account rep. The original rep was supposed to have called me on Wednesday, logged that she tried but I had no missed calls on my phone. She was calling to tell me my restore request was denied.

Needless to say I wasn't thrilled and let the rep know. She reached out to a supervisor who was able to restore the data plan so I'm a happy AT&T customer now. It shouldn't be this way but at least the 2nd person cared enough to see everything through.
