I expect LTE to be like that in a year or two, especially when the I-Phone 5 comes out.

I'm in Bend, no LTE here yet, but was in Portland the other day overnite and certainly enjoyed the faster speeds. I really hope LTE does not get throttled or some such thing down the road. You that are enjoying it are really fortunate as so many more of us do not have access yet.
More to the topic, I have been using the hot spot hack which works as well as any 3rd party app and maybe a bit better as far as connecting. In any case I've been doing it with my Maxx for at least seven months and on previous devices for about two or three years. Never had any issues with Verizon. I don't go nuts with it or anything, saving that for when LTE gets here..
I recall about two years ago I was using a BB bold and tethered to my laptop in a remote location where there was no Internet or tv signal(daughters house in the boonies of new mexico) on 3G no less and we watched a 90 minute movie on Hulu and never even buffered, no hic ups at all. Tells me, these days the 3G is either throttled or over loaded because you sure can't do that today.

No problems in the Reno, NV area been wifi tethering for a while, enjoying LTE :-)
Except that the most recent docs from the FCC appear to allow the extra tethering charge for unlimited users. I have done much to preserve my unlimited data plan. I would hate to lose it over tethering.
Yeah,it does kind of make one wonder what lengths Verizon may go to, to get people off unlimited data plans. I mean once were out of contract they could do just about anything I would think. Regarding tethering tho, I wonder if they have any way of figuring out if our data use is from tethering or just phone usage. If one were to keep it reasonable I'd think you could slide under the radar maybe. And, along that train of thought I'm also curious if they could see which apps we had downloaded from the playstore. If a 3rd party wifi tether app was in the list it could raise a red flag. So maybe the hotspot hack is more easily gotten past them. No clue just speculating.
Which is all anyone can do til Labor Day. When vzw releases the consent decree response plan document then we should have a much better idea of what's up.
I believe Zappy is relying on language that has a completely different application for his interpretation. But I don't totally discount the possibility that vzw could try that tack, too.

There is nothing in the decree that says VZW can't charge $30 for tethering on unlimited accounts. I wish it wasn't the case but the words needed aren't there. And VZW confirmed this with Maggie at CNET.
Now I am left wondering what happens if VZW sees an unlimited account that is tethering without paying the extra $30 fee. Do they ignore the tethering, give a warning, add the $30 tethering fee, or are they willing to claim a breach of contract and move the user to usage based?
VZW should be able to identify tethering. Its fairly easy with packet analysis tools.
There is nothing in the 700C regs that says VZW can't block third-party tethering apps on the PlayPlace. I wish it wasn't the case but the words needed aren't there. And VZW confirmed this by just having Google do it.

The decree merely states that VZW cannot block third party tethering apps and other third party apps. It allows those currently on usage based plans using VZW's MBC to cancel without penalty and use a third party tethering app. I suspect that if customers are able to tether without being tagged by VZW and consume mega amounts of data, that VZW will just force users with the unlimited data feature to make a new choice of plan, be it tiered data or a new Share Everything plan as their contracts expire.
Maybe my point earlier was a little vague, but I was eluding to the situation of when contracts expire, mine is up early 2013 and I'd not want to renew at a shared data plan rate, wanting to prefer to remain unlimited, keeping my Maxx till it self destructs, so at this point Verizon could say,"hey, your using 5GB data average per month. We suspect you of tethering, you can either pay the $30 extra per month fee or come to a shared plan, otherwise your out". With no contract they would be holding all the cards.
Now, a better scenario for unlimited users out of contract would be Verizon does nothing because so many others have gone to shared data plans that the coffers at big red are over flowing. I'm hoping that enough unlimited users jump on shared plans simply because it works for them and the rest of us can relax for the time being anyway.
