Is it still worth buying a 4S on contract?

Getting real annoyed with my Razr Maxx lately and I want to jump ship to an iPhone...my only hesitation is that in about a month, maybe a month and a half we could expect to see the 5 released. My thoughts are to pick up a 4S on upgrade, and then when the 5 comes out, sell the 4S as well as my Maxx and put the funds towards full retail on the 5. Any reasons why I should not do this? I'm expecting even with the 5's release to still get approximately $300 for the 4S and about the same for my Maxx....so I'm looking at $600 towards a $650 full retail. I'm really seeing this as a six in one hand, half dozen the other situation, but maybe another set of eyes might be helpful to see something I'm not.

    TIA!

are you looking to do this to save money, or to have an unlocked iphone from buying it directly from Apple? Finding one to buy outright within the first month will probably be pretty difficult I'd imagine. Something to bear in mind, I know nobody sells them outright here in Canada after launch, except Apple stores, and they limit it to 10/day. Granted the US may get more stock so this may not apply. Remember though, every "new" model year (ie 3G, 4, soon to be realeased 5) are harder to get ahold of than the refreshes (3gs, 4s) as the demand is higher.

Just keep in mind that Apple didn't start selling unlocked 4S iPhones until a month or more after initial release, and they'll likely do the same with the next generation iPhone.

Not entirely true. I know folks who ordered off apple website via preorder, paid full price and those were unlocked
I'm not telling you anything that you can't just google for yourself

I'm looking to do this so I can keep my unlimited data by upgrading a secondary line to the 4S, deactivate it (reactivating a Krzr) and activating the 4S on my line. I just want to ensure I don't loose my unlimited data...

The phone the original Poster is currently using is a Verizon model so unlocking is irrelevant with an iPhone.

I'd say wait dude. Delayed gratification and all that.

The iPhone 5 probably isn't too far off and the value of the iPhone 4S will inevitably go down as a bunch of other people have the same idea and flood the market with 4S's for sale.

However, the 4S is still a great phone. If you can live with one whilst everyone else walks around with an iPhone 5 - then the best money saving solution would be to get the 4S and get the 5 when the hype dies down a bit.

Wouldnt upgrading a line still be forced to pay a data plan on the second line since its a smartphone? im not sure you can just dump it like that with a dumb phone, but what you could do is upgrade your second line to the 5 and swap out the 5 for the max. Im sure you can transfer phones, as long as the unlimited line doesnt upgrade. It really makes no sense to buy a 4s now, just wait. its like announced tomorrow haha

I've been hearing rumors all over the web that Apple may sell the 4s for $375 unlocked after the new iPhone is announced. I can't substantiate it though.
