Intermittent Data on ST & H20 - possible fix too

I have a IP4 on ST and my wife has one on H20. Also have a friend with a 3GS and IP4 on H20. Not sure if this is only a regional thing but in the last month our data has become very inconsistent. I have looked up a few things online and it seems like many people with GSM data plans are suffering with intermittent service. Sometimes iMessages won't go through other times I need to refresh a page 3-4 times before it loads. Or other times I need to cycle airplane mode to get things going again.
I looked through the recent ST and H20 posts but didn't really see anything similar.
I have tried a simple solution and it appears to be working well. My thought was that ATT DNS might be getting blasted with all the smartphone usage in the past few months. With the increase of prepaid smartphones and the increased sales of postpaid smartphones I think it's plausible that AT&T hasn't been able to keep up with the demand. So I have installed a cydia tweak that allows me to change the 3G DNS servers. I have chosen OpenDNS, and things seem to be working much better. I'll update the post in the next week or so to give some further conclusions on this fix.

Great suggestion... data seems to be going much better (it seems like all the time-outs had to do with DNS queries.)

I didn't even realize there was a tweak in cydia for this or I would have done it a long time ago!

Thanks for the information. My phone already works much better!

If you're able to change your DNS Servers, you might also consider Google's DNS Servers:

    Primary: 8.8.8.8
    Secondary: 8.8.4.4

The best way to test whether DNS is the problem would be to download Terminal Emulator and then try pinging google.com and then trying to ping Google's IP address directly.

I used google's dns as that's what I have my home router on... no way in hell would I ever consider using Charter's DNS and if I get to avoid AT&T's even better!

Yes. I did it when I first got my phone.

I used ROM Toolbox, but this will work too:

i suspected this was the issue and posted so several days ago but i did not know of a fix. i dont use apple. i hope there is a fix for android. att should have the capacity to easily fix this issue. they have been under attack several times recently. the attacks must be specific and the fallovers are failing for it to go on this long

    ChazzMatt-
Thanks for the tip. I definitely woulnd't say my issue is fixed, but it does seem to be at least somewhat more likely to connect for me now. Seems to have adversely affected my download speed, though. Before the fix, when it'd actually make a data connection on it's own, I'd top out at around 4-500 KB/s. Now, it seems to be topping out around 100KB/s. I'm really kicking myself for letting my shiny new phone lure me away from the great service I had with Virgin Mobile.

Glad this seems to work, I haven't had it happen since I switched my DNS. But I still want to give it a few more days to see it it really fixes it.

I went ahead and ran speedtest.
I wasn't able to run it for the longest time. Now granted I am at home and barely have 3 bars so I will need to run it again to see if it gets better. But my download was between 2.7-3.3mbps. That seems about right for me.

In reference to the DNS servers I have used both OpenDNS and google. Both seem just as fast. But I might try google out and compare speeds.

Can you please post a more in-depth walk through of what you exactly did for the IPHONE users?
what was the name of the program you downloaded in Cydia?
what repository did you download this program from?
what were the exact settings you entered in?
    any additional steps?

    Thank you!

I experienced the data issues today and did some pretty extensive testing. I don't think it is a DNS problem. When I ping'd Google, the DNS lookup succeeded, but the Ping's failed. When I cycled my data connection off and then on again, the ping immediately started working, and worked for a short time before failing again.

This is an AT&T network issue, and it'll get fixed when AT&T fixes it...

So I have tried this for about a week now. I have less occurrences of data outage, but it still happens. But compared to my wife and friend who did not try the hack yet, the outages are less.
I agree that there is def an issue with AT&T towers. Perhaps their push for LTE has left the HSPA towers wanting for some attention.

The Cydia hack I have used is GuizmoDNS.
