prepaid data vs ipad prepaid data

Today at a telus store, when I asked for prepaid data plans for ipad, I was kindof surprised to find that prepaid ipad data is different from the phone based data plans!

Is the prepaid data different for ipad vs smartphones? Prepaid ipad data starts at $15 for 250 MB to $35 for 5 GB. Phone data plans start at $10 for 100MB and $30 for 1 GB.

Does anyone know if the prepaid ipad plans are somewhat different from prepaid phone based plans? Is the APN different? What would happen if I put a SIM with a normal phone data plan on an ipad?

I think you can swap sim. The reason why prepaid is a better value is because postpaid is generally subsidy based, that's why it's more expensive.

    apn is different ...
    isp.telus.com is for tethering - aircard - ipad - smarthub - hotspot ...
sp.telus.com or bb.telus.com is for smartphone or blackberry ... if you use this apn on ipad plan you will be charged per mb !

Yes you activate it from your ipad.

You can technically use prepaid data plans for phones in your ipad if you wanted to. The ipad plans offer you more value for your money though.

The "activate from ipad" doesnt work for me... because the Telus store sold me a normal prepaid sim not an ipad SIM (which is pre-registred on the network). Even worse, their web site says I can get a SIM for free fom an apple store. The telus store didnt tell me this.. the apple store is in the same mall!!

To add to the confusion, the store staff themselves dont know how this plan works , and other companies like Fido and ROgers are also clueless on "prepaid sim on ipad". They are used to monthly data plans on the ipad, usually on a contract.

The reason why I want to use the prepaid plan is... the ipad plans cannot be cancelled from a PC. You need the ipad. I will cancel the plan in a week or two, and I dont need a lot of data. Its just to test drive the ipad. (I am borrowing i t from a friend for a few days) :-)

Make sure he choses CLOSE LATER because if he chooses CLOSE NOW the card is fried and (currently) virtually unable to replace.

I activated a normal prepaid to test the data. It worked fine, and served my purpose.

On my prepaid iPhone (the phone prepaid plans) the default APN is isp.telus.com. I assume because of this tethering is allowed and not charged extra and therefore could work in an iPad. One thing to note on this prepaid plan is the overage is $2/MB.
