Post Is it possible to use an old Rogers cell phone or speakout cell phone w/ Virgin mobil

I have a couple of old Rogers and speakout phones, that I am thinking of giving to my elderly parents. They are currently on Virgin mobile's prepaid service. I don't much about Virgin mobile, but saw that they now have sim card phones. Does that mean, if I CAN unlock these old speakout and Rogers phones, that they can use their Virgin Mobile sims with these old phones?

Does it depend entirely on the type of phone? Or is it not possible for this scenario?

    TIA,
    ET

Thanks for the reply. If they do not currently have a virgin Mobile simple, then I might assuming they will have to buy one.
