The google nexus is your best bet good hardware and software comes unlocked HSPA compatible. Straight talk is having issues with AT&T data right now but that should end soon.

Looking into switching right now, but would like a recommendation for a android phone.
Interested in getting those hspa+ at&t speeds, so would like to make sure that I buy the correct hardware.
Maybe you guys can throw in some recommendations for less expensive options.
Thanks

right now the att mvno is in a state of flux.if att is king in your area might wait a bit.but if t mobile or verizon is in your area they would ne a better choice if you are lookinh at data mostly.
I wouldn't mind Verizon on straight talk, but where do you get that? I don't see it on their site
verizon dont use simcards.go over to the verizon pre pay forum they can help you
None at the moment, until ST gets their sh$# fixed. The SGSIII is the best Android phone on the market at the moment, and comes in ATT or TMO variants that can be used on ST, or the iPhone if you insist on ATT, is the best iOS device at the moment, but will be updated soon
I'm going to jump in with my 2 cents and answer a few questions that you've asked.
Verizon - there are 2 phones from ST that run on Verizon - the Proclaim and the Zip. Of the two, the Proclaim is reported to be the better phone. While it is not a high-end Android by any stretch, it's not bottom of the barrel either. It's a mid-level phone.
AT&T BYOD - As you can see, tempers are flaring as this "glitch" drags on. Intermittent data issues have happened before on ST AT&T, usually lasting about a week. The first reports of this outage on HOFO came on Aug. 7, which means we've had 2 full weeks now. Others have said 3 weeks, but the first report here on HOFO was 2 weeks ago. Will this glitch end? Hopefully soon, but we have no guarantees as to timing, and it's more than frustrating when the company won't at the least acknowledge the problem and tell us that they are taking steps to fix it.
Specific phone -- If you're an Apple person, I'd wait a month. When the iPhone 5 comes out, a 4S will be affordable. If you're an Android person, then I would say that the Nexus provides the best bang for the buck. True, the G3S is the king of the hill right now, but while most phones are still waiting to get Ice Cream Sandwich, the Nexus was the first to get Jelly Bean, and the fact that they gave the Nexus S Jelly Bean means that the Nexus will probably get the next version of Android immediately as well. The comment about battery life doesn't jive with my experience. I heard complaints about batter life before I bought mine, and I haven't had that much trouble. If I have moderate use, I can get almost 2 days out of it. The one area that hasn't been true for me is using GPS. It sucks battery life quickly, but then again it does in most phones. I had a 4S on ST, loved it. Lost it on a roller coaster, and went with the Nexus, and I love it, too. Been very happy with it. If you're looking for something cheaper than that, you might look at a G2S or Skyrocket, which have come down in price since the G3S was released. But for me, the G3S isn't worth $200 more than the Nexus.
Thank you for the concise reply.
I am coming from the epic touch on sprint, so really big problems with gps and signal aren't a stranger to me.
I really believe now that Samsung is behind most of the problems with reception and gps (replaced 3 phone for that issue alone). This has caused me to be really gun shy about another samsung product. I have seen reports online that the galaxy nexus is having similar reception problems to the SG2, including issues after the ICS update.
Have you had any signal issues with your nexus?
I was really thinking about the HTC One X.
Anyway, thanks again.
