$79.99 on Mts vs. $49.99 on rogers with 3yr. Or $179.99 for 2yr on mts vs. $449.99 on rogers. Hopefully low 2year prices is something that catches on in the industry

... but there's no LTE network in Manitoba to use it with Rogers yet...
Besides - this is pretty much a "test phone". I read elsewhere that MTS only stocked 100 for the whole province. Come November - that will be the real test as to MTS' smartphone strategy in the longer term.
My guess is that they were able to secure this stock for "cost".
Carrier: MTS | Handset: Galaxy S3 | Plan: 100 minutes, U/L Evenings & Weekends, U/L SMS, Call Display | Data: UNLIMITED LTE - $16.50
I guess Mts doesn't have rogers buying power. But if you buy it outright you can get it anywhere.
Hopefully they get a bigger selection soon and start selling through bestbuy like sasktel

This is some interesting news. I sure hope they upgrade the firmware on all the HSPA+ towers in Manitoba to enable LTE everywhere 3.5G is currently available. Does anyone know what frequency MTS LTE will be running on for sure? (Could one assume it is running in 850mhz or 1900mhz) I did not think the CRTC had had their auction to sell any 700 MHz spectrum? I would be curious to hear about any testing and real world usage reports in WPG or Brandon.

No partnership, yet they both announced exclusivity with Ericsson for LTE infrastructure. Seems like a colossal waste to needlessly double up on towers. There may be some kind of deal in place they are keeping quiet.

Since they are using their own towers, I would assume they would need to build out new towers everywhere LTE goes.
I assume they will use Winnipeg/Brandon to work out the kinks, and then move on to other smaller cities like Portage, Selkirk, etc, etc. I doubt they will put LTE on every tower as soon as possible.
Also, LTE is on 2100 right now IIRC, but when the CRTC has their auction, which should happen end of 2012 early 2013, I assume MTS will try to build out their LTE on 700mhz because the penetration and coverage is WAY better than 2100.
From MTS:
Anyone tried an LTE-enabled device on the network yet?“MTS’s 4G LTE Wireless Network is live. We commercially launched our 4G LTE wireless service in Winnipeg and Brandon on August 28, 2012. We also introduced two new LTE-enabled devices – the Sony Xperia ion Smartphone and the Huawei E397 Wireless Internet Stick – which will work on our 4G LTE service where 4G LTE is available (Winnipeg and Brandon) and elsewhere in Manitoba on our existing 4G (HSPA+) network.”
What is this I hear about MTS replacing all their equipment on towers all over Manitoba the next month? Apparently that is why we're having service issues in Teulon.
So they're not doing work on their towers? Why are there continuing issues with service then?
Every wireless telecom company constantly adds equipment to their towers or changes the configuration to serve customers more effectively. Very seldom will any sort of replacement be done. After an upgrade is done there is often a period of testing and verification which is probably what you are seeing.
And it takes a month to test and verify stuff? I'm sitting here with zero bars service, where before I had two. Its freakin' annoying already.
