Knowing where Jerry lives I can tell you it isn't cell breathing. The population density to support the theory is just not there.

You know what? It's possible that your service is becoming worse from cell breathing. This is actually a pretty real problem that happened to the area around one of my homes when a bunch of people in the town switched to VZW.
Basically, a lot of people are joining VZW and their CDMA networks have the unfortunate limitation that the coverage per tower shrinks as more users hop on it. As you are in eastern NC and VZW has lots of LTE there (and a strong network overall in NC) it wouldn't shock me that enough people have switched to cause capacity/coverage issues.
The good news is that if this is the case, it will improve by itself as people move over to LTE (either by channels being freed up to deploy more 1x voice [along with regaining 3G capacity] or by phones supporting VoLTE and removing themselves from the 1x/3G networks entirely).

I can honestly say that in my area it will get no better as Verizon has told me they have no intentions of fixing the problem here, the tower they **** down was an ex alltel tower and they have removed all equipment from it.
I intend to continue with my hounding them till I'm let out of my contract, I'm paying for superior service and receiving sprint like service.
A few months ago I had no problems with service in the county I work in, they were the best of the best, now service sucks!
I bought a US cellular u prepaid from Walmart and it works everywhere, just so I won't be without coverage, but my wife drives through these areas and actually had her car break down one night and it took six calls to get me the information to get to her to help her, unacceptable!!!!
Why did it censor shut ?
Could this be the phenomenon being reported by the customers in this thread (link below) ? On all our non-smartphones regardless of brand, we're experiencing what they're reporting -- a white-noise that begins when the other party starts speaking and ends when the other party finishes speaking.
