$30 plan with a reasonable phone on WIFI

Straight Talk used to let me use my iphone on the $30 plan so I was able to use wifi at the time.. I stopped using them awhile and my iphone broke.
Now I'm wondering, since they've made a new disclaimer under their phones for sale ("This phone will only work with the $45 Unlimited Plan or the $60 Unlimited + International Plan") ... do you guys still think there is a way of using the $30 plan with say, an LG Optimus Q? Or are they just pushing the $45 since that's the "cheapest" on their site now? I already have the $30 service card but don't want to wastefully activate it..

i have been dying to try the s390g with a $30 card. its got wifi. odd angle is it says it takes a only $45 plan to activate but you can also buy the $30 plan, $45 and $60 at checkout. no other $45 phone lists the $30 card at checkout. net and trac is by the minute.

but no. the android phones are $45 phones only.

All smartphones sold by Straight Talk will accept only the $45 service plan. Other phones sold by Straight Talk will accept either the $30 or $45 service plan. Any GSM phone you use in the Bring You Own Phone SIM card program requires the $45 plan no matter whether it is a smartphone or not.

I understand this is what they say now and it is a change made in the last few months. But does anyone know what will HAPPEN if I do try the $30 plan on a byop.. Will it not let me make a call. period? I'm just curious what their recent change was to not let our own phone work on the cheaper plan.

You will not be allowed to add that service plan. Back when you did the $30 service plan there was no Bring Your Own Phone program. People simply swapped the SIM card in a Straight Talk phone with their own GSM phone. The only phones allowing this were the two, then three, Nokia smartphones sold by Straight Talk. They always required the unlimited plan. Before the BYOP SIM card program, there was no officially approved method to use your own phone. Straight Talk just looked the other way when you did it. Since they did not run the network, they may not have been aware of your actions. They control use at the SIM card and/or phone level to determine what service plan you can use.
