[top]An LTE iPhone Could Send Some Customers From AT&T to Verizon

Launched exclusively on AT&T in 2007, the iPhone has remained more of a boon for the carrier than any rival that gained on it in the years that followed. Indeed, in the second quarter of 2012, AT&T activated 3.7 million iPhones, a million more than archrival Verizon was able to in the same period. But that could change with the debut of an LTE-capable version of the Apple handset.AT&T’s LTE (long term evolution) network is not nearly as broad as Verizon’s. And because of that, the debut of an LTE iPhone could put it at a competitive disadvantage.
“As of the end of 2Q12, Verizon’s LTE network covered 230 million POPs, more than all the other carriers in the U.S. combined,” Jefferies & Co. analyst Thomas Seitz said in a note to clients. “We believe this network advantage could lead to a share shift towards Verizon, primarily at AT&T’s expense.”
According to Seitz, the debut of an LTE iPhone could cause a modest decline in AT&T’s share of U.S. iPhone sales — to 45 percent in the third quarter of 2012, from 47 percent in the second quarter of 2012.
Ironically, that could be further compounded by the company’s past success. Seitz notes that AT&T sold nine million iPhones in the third and fourth quarter of 2010, and many of those customers will likely be coming off contract right around the time Apple’s next-generation iPhone launches. For them, Verizon’s broader LTE coverage could be a compelling reason to switch carriers — assuming the next iPhone supports LTE

Apple has antagonized so many of its potential Voice over LTE chipmakers with patent lawsuits, that they may have difficulty implementing a compatible VoLTE solution. Even the LTE chips are supplied by outside firms. If Apple tries to develop its own chipsets, they run the risk of infringing upon others' intellectual property.

It'll happen eventually. I'll get LTE when a phone I like happens to have it. Until then, meh. If I was on Verizon, I'd care. Faux G is usually pretty darn good on AT&T.
I usually support government regulation, but It is unfortunate that the government over-regulated and killed the AT&T/ T-Mobile Merger
The best explanation of the pricing nutiness in the industry.
Why Sprint and T-Mo will always suck.
The only way to end the pricing insanity is to eliminate contracts and subsidies.
I want Wifi calling on AT&T.
If you text while driving, you're an idiot. End of story.

I'm running 3G on AT&T, and running 4g on my Vz lte device and the AT&T 3G holds its own very well. The vz lte is nice when I hit peak speeds but lately it's dropped quite a bit. I do like having both to play around with.

Vz does gain a marketing advantage due to them having more lte built out now though which they can play on when the new phone comes out.

Where I live (Metro Atlanta) AT&T already covers 99.999% of the places I go most often with LTE and the other places are "4G" which is still very fast most times. In the places I frequent AT&T has better LTE coverage than Verizon because they have significantly more towers closer together. Right now AT&T LTE speeds are much higher than Verizon's on average but that could change once more people get on the network.

    Why not

Both VZW & ATT are raising their prices. So in the case of VZW why not pay for what you get. Where as ATT is pay for what we promise.

Where I live T-Mobile does better than ATT. And with their Facetime crap they're pulling, I'm sure people will jump ship. Maybe not in the masses but over time I'm sure ATT will see losses.

If I get the new iPhone, which I have no plans to, it would almost def be on att. For me att has been much more reliable than vz lately and att treats me better, much better. I have a car payment so I can see myself cutting my vz lines before long to cut back some.

I agree that some might leave if the next iPhone uses the LTE network but sounds more like when Verizon got the iPhone 4. Some left but it was not a mass exodus

If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

In my case the LTE iPhone is gonna send me to sprint, VZW is too expensive and sprint is gonna have LTE coverage by my house sooner then AT&T ever will (they stop with it 4 miles west of me) and sprint coverage is more consistent then AT&T over here.

Correct, but it looks like the OP did the 2 year math, that's why I bolded it! If the exodus numbers go up 50% or so, then we have great evidence.

Good point also, in that case you get a two-fer, asuming Sprints Lte meets your needs. In my area it does!

There is a blog piece today or yesterday indicating the movement to prepay in other countries. Not much in the US, but the carriers here are pricing themselves out of the market right now! The cable co's here are losing customer in droves and will continue, because as children that don't use cable as much as the current data only entertainment just won't buy!

I hit a carrier blind spot everyday (82N from Baltimore to York PA) with all four carriers, so to me that shows a reluctance by carriers to support areas that will hurt them eventually. Remember "The Allover Network", now is Not!
