So is there any way to get around paying full price for a brand new virgin mobile phone? Can I buy a used virgin mobile phone?

What I would like to know is how easy is it to unlock the iphone 4s from VM in case you want to move to another carrier.

Impossible, actually. VM isn't unlocking these iPhones, so you'd have to sell it and buy a phone that you can use elsewhere.

You could technically use a sprint or verizon/cdma iphone if you can clone the esn of a virgin mobile phone. But there has not been a way released into the general public yet. Not even the Chinese have it figured out yet.

I remember a long time ago someone got them to accept a verizon iphone's esn onto thier system but i think they got super lucky. Def not happening now since they sell the iphone lol.

You could maybe use the gevey sim unlock but im not sure if it 100% sure if it would work or not for virgin iphones. I know it does for verizon and sprint though.

Wow that is just sad. So by far the best solution is to buy an iphone from apple so you can use it on any network (well accept VM), and thus keep the maximum amount of resale value for when you want to trade up?

Virgin is CDMA, and part of Sprint. VM phones only work on VM. As for GSM they can be unlocked and put on Tmobile or ATT or any carrier around the world. Better to buy unlocked from Apple, and be able to use it on any carrier. Even if the 4S does have a sim, the phone is CDMA and its not using the sim in any way. So no.

Had Unlimited Data on Verizon. Now on 6GB share plan(not a real biggie).

You can buy a Refurbished VM phone (Most models except the iPhone) from Virgin Mobile through the Account Suspension method (in case of Loss, Theft, etc.). They usually sell them with at a substantial discount to encourage subscribers to stay with Virgin Mobile instead of moving to another prepaid provider.

Operating without a contract makes you far more valuable.
