Can't afford contract due to health....

Hello everyone! I'm currently on MTS but finding it very hard to stay a float paying my bill. I have been fighting rectal and lung cancer for the past 14mths unable to work I'm now fighting to pay this bill. Has anyone heard of canceling a contract due to health issues? Supplying proof of my illness is no problem my oncologist is willing to sign off on anything. Thanks for your time! Cheers!

You could try to post your contract on kijjii or something and have someone take it over if you can't cancel it.

Yes I fully understand that I could go that route, but was just wondering if anyone has heard of a contract being canceled due to my issue. Plus have you ever sold stuff on kijjii? For the most part people are really cool but the trolls on their is just unbearable. Thanks for the response! Cheers!

How many more months do you have left on the contract? It might be possible to strike a deal with MTS - you won't know unless you ask. I would hope they would bend a little on this issue.

There are contract services available as well, but they mostly deal in larger cities.

Depending on the situation with MTS, otherwise I might be inclined to lend some assistance as well, in my limited means.

All the best with your fight, by the way.

I would also recommend Kijiji. Although transferring a contract on MTS isn't the easiest. Last time I did it, you had to go down to one of their stores and have them fax a request to their main office and then it takes a long time for it to process. Not sure if it's changed.

Depending on how good your plan is, it's not that hard to find someone to take it over, especially if you're offering a handset with it.

    Take care.

Well thanks everyone for the fast response. It's seems it might be a case by case basis, I really think it depends on who you get on the other end of the phone. Kijiji really is a big pain in the butt. Anyhow thanks to you all for the suggestions... I will leave a follow up once I get this resolved. CHEERS!

The contract was pretty new, I had it only about a month before the initial cancer diagnoses. Thanks so much Derfel for the help. My fight is rounding the corner to a cleaner bill of health but it's been one hell of a fight, three major surgeries and a boat load of chemo. CHEERS!

Go in and talk to a corporate rep at a corporate store. They would understand it a lot better.

Called MTS today and they where very good to deal with. Talked to a lady over there she said they will waive the 400 fee to cancel a contract, I need to send the phone back to them. A shed a tear of relief, I will never say another bad thing about mts again. Does this sound like a good deal? I paid $170 for this phone under a year ago. I feel a *little* ripped off about losing that money but I have to look at that compared to $400. At least with the $400 I can keep the phone. Anyhow having cancer doesn't kill the business man in us all. :-)

One question I forgot to ask was, will my number die? I heard we keep our number where ever we go. Even if I don't have a contract will I still be able to use my old number in the future?

Thanks again to MTS! True saints. And all the support from the people on this thread!

    Cheers!
    Todd

In my experience the phone number will be given out to someone else in a short period of time. The phone is not worth keeping for $400 IMO. Once back on your feet you can re sign and get a better one. If your really worried about the number I would look at porting to a VOIP services or a cheap voice plan with another Carrier or even MTS
