Razr Maxx HD. Is there any way to get rid of the screen to the left with the abbreviated settings menu?

    Probably a custom launcher.

Anyone successfully tether your maxx hd? I want to tether a Transformer tf101 thru bluetooth. It worked great thru the first gen Droid.

If you tether with a 3rd party app, do NOT TAKE ANY UPDATE. 4.1.2 breaks it beyond belief.

BT and USB Tether work out of the box and rooting allows the SQLlite hack to work for the MHS on all of the 4.1.2 Motorola releases.

So....if you KEEP refusing to install the update, will the day come when Verizon FORCES it onto the phone?

    No...

And if you are on the 4.1.1 rooted you can disable this notification

Yes. It will probably happen when you're not looking and simply fail to respond to the prompt, perhaps overnight.

I haven't fully researched this, but I understand that simply installing a custom recovery, like CWMR, will prevent the OTA update install. You could also root and use TiBU pro to freeze the updater apk. Or any custom ROM prevents the update, of course.

All you need to do to prevent the update from successfully installing itself is to alter any file in the /system directory.
All updates have a verification script that checks the md5 checksum of every file in the /system directory before it starts to write anything.

Loading a custom recovery is only possible on a boot loader unlocked device, so it is not an option on stock hardware.
Using a bootstrapped recovery like SafeStrap will accomplish the same thing though, simply by virtue of the fact that it alters system files when it installs.

This doesn't stop the update from downloading or get rid of the nags and prompts though, you need to disable the apks to prevent those.

    Thank you! for the clarification.

What about adding or deleting a /system file? Does the OTA expect a specific known set of /system files to exist on the device?

In any case (my rooted Xoom in particular), a custom recovery fully blocks the update install. That is most comforting to know.
