...but before you get too excited, it won't let me verify them. I added a couple 519 numbers and it accepts them and shows them in the list of forwarding numbers, but they cannot actually be forwarded to until they are verified. Doing that brings up the dialog with the 2 digit code and the Connect button. But when I press connect, it immediately says "We could not verify your phone. Please try again." Guess they are still filtering out Canadian numbers but at a later stage. Maybe this implied progress towards allowing Canadian users.
On a side note, cscat was able to change his GV number itself to a 403 number for $10. I tried the same, and was able to but decided to wait. Waited too long as they now have no 403 numbers available to assign, but again, this might show they are working towards a Canadian release, finally.

hmmm..still won't let me verify a 519 number. It's in the list of forwarded numbers but keeps throwing an error when I try to verify. Is your number a 403 number?
Holy crap it's true. I just attempted to add my 778 cell number (on WIND) and it worked! Verification call came through and everything.
What's the common thread here... 778, 780 and 587 are all newer "overlay" area codes. 403 and 519 (anything with a 1 or 0 in the middle) are older area codes.
Data point: I can't verify my 604 number.
I also couldn't verify a 778-783-xxxx number.
Maybe Google is planning something with Wind. That might be the commonality.
Well, for anyone that can get it working, if you have a smart phone and either unlimited incoming or unlimited local minutes, you just gained unlimited calling to North America. Configure your app to use callback (or Click2Call) to your cell number and you can dial out using the app for free long distance.
And if you want to get a little convoluted, you can get a Dell Voice or FreePhoneLine number with one of the new area codes, forward it to your cell, add the DV/FPL number as a forwarding number in GV and you also have free long distance.
Same here... Added a 416 number but could not verify it.

Just tried my 778-779-xxxx number (on WIND) and a 604 number with no luck.
Slightly different case. When they shut it down, you could no longer add 403 numbers as forwarding numbers and were never able to add other Canadian numbers.
The new behaviour allows you to add any Canadian number as a forwarding number but then prevents you from verifying...but others have been able to the verify.
The other new behavior that was around briefly was that you could buy a new Google Voice number from the 403 bucket. I missed it, but that would have been great.

I wonder why some Canadian numbers are suddenly working. Did their filters go down for a little while? Or are they preparing for a Canadian launch?
I tried seeing what area codes work if I try to change my number but I'm getting errors no matter what I put in (even American area codes).

I think that they are now allowing Canadian numbers to be added as forwarding numbers (even if they can't yet be verified for most) and that they were allowing 403 numbers to be purchased might mean they are preparing to rollout here. But that might be false hope.
It looks like Skype is also planning a Canadian rollout soon. Maybe the CRTC is loosening up.
