Yeah, back in the day Nokia was the RF signal king. From what I see on the forums its still very good of course that means your running windows phone for an OS. My Maxx is also very good and I have no complaints. Any Motorola would be pretty good. I get signal in places I'd not of thought. HTC is also usually quite good. Samsung is the one to stay away from if Rf is a concern as they are consistently poor.

As a former droid 2, bionic, 4, and razr maxx user...I can say Motorola seems to be tops when it comes to reception. iPhone (for me, anyway) hasn't been bad either.

I have an iPhone 5 and had the 4s before it and I can say it's definitely above average in signal quality. I would say that probably only Motorola is better from experience, don't have any with a nokia smartphone. My samsung galaxy nexus is the worst by far with my HTC thunderbolt only being slightly better than that.

The only Nokia phone experience i have is the 6265i on US Cellular circa 2007. Everyone hailed it as the best phone around for reception, but I found its Motorola competitors at the time (v3m, e815, etc) to be far better.

I've used dozens of different Verizon smartphones, and I can definitely say the best I've seen were the Droid Bionic and the Droid RAZR HD/RAZR MAXX HD. Much smoother and more consistent performance, and they hold on to 4G better than the others.

The RazrHD/MAXX HD work well. The Razr M does not. Avoid anything Samsung. HTC is so-so.

My own experience with a few smartphones in rural areas left me with the impression that the iPhone 4S and 5 (I use one of each) are about the best current smartphones, signal-wise. I own a small company and have about 30 VZW lines, with some of my clients being "out in the sticks" - my clients don't care about reception, it works or they get ticked off. I personally tested both of the above iPhones and several current Android phones - both iPhones had a signal and could connect when my RAZR MAXX, GNex, SGS3 wouldn't even get a signal, and both iPhones would connect to USCC when the Android phones wouldn't even get a signal. I'm not anti-Moto - I still carry and use a SEEM-edited ATTWS RAZR V3XX (including several calls today). I'm trying out a Lumia 822 if the guy (from CL) ever calls me back.

My iPhone 5 gets LTE where my buddy's GNex sees only EVDO in downtown PDX and Seattle. VZW's Samsung smartphones work well in a city. I was seriously disappointed in the RAZR MAXX - I could make calls and get data with both iPhones when the MAXX was just a brick without a signal.

Look up one of my test runs, the stretch of State Route 4 from Longview WA to Skamokawa WA. Check my other test runs, from Portland OR to either Hood River OR to Bend OR. My (now sold) SGS3 would never see a network outside Longview but both iPhones can make and hold calls the entire route. I'd pick the iPhone 5 first. Good luck.
