    Breakout without Verizon, wifi only?

I have an older Pantech Breakout which is slow and has a few issues, and a missing back cover, and a newer Verizon android phone.

    1. Before I move to the new one, is it possible to keep using the old one on WiFi only, so maps and other stuff continues to work, even though the cellular radio part is gone?

    2. Would it be possible to load another image of the OS on this after I move the account? I want to strip out all the Verizon stuff which would no longer be usable, as well as the NFL, Kindle, Blockbuster, and other stuff.

    3. I just want to put some educational apps and maybe a game or two on there for the kids.

If I "rooted" it, is it still possible to add new stuff using Wi-Fi, or am I stuck at that point in time? This would just be for a useful device when around the house, or when at a hotel or something which has Wi-Fi, to look things up, and do some other stuff.

    Thanks.
