ZTE Valet won't unlock or turn off

I have a ZTE Valet from tracfone and was getting the message "unfortunately google Text-to-Speech stopped". I went to the message board for tracfone and they chatted with me and sent me to the tts settings and now my phone won't turn off without removing the battery. When I do turn it back on, it won't unlock. A yellow box surrounds the screen and it makes a awful sound. The person I was chatting with kept telling me to factory reset it from the settings, but I can't unlock it to get to the settings. I called the phone and it rang and showed the answer screen but the above message covered it and I couldn't answer or unlock.
    Help and thank you.
    Kathy

Funny...I also have been getting this same error message when I try to use Google Maps app. Do you remember what setting they told you to change to?

I also just had a problem where I could not turn my ZTE phone ON even though the battery was fully charged. I was finally able to turn on after I kept the battery out of the phone for several minutes before I re-installed and hit the Power button. Suggest you keep the battery out of the phone for a longer period before you retry.

I have seen that a lot of the valet users were getting this message, that is why I decided to try and talk to tracfone. She never told me what to do other than go into my TTS setting and see if it was on. But that is when all the problems really happened and the phone locked up.
I did finally contact a live person on the phone and the only way to get the phone working again was to "hold the power and volume up button" at the same time. From that screen I was able to factory reset. After that the google Text-to-Speech message didn't come up (not yet). I didn't have that much saved on my phone so loosing data wasn't a big deal. I am just happy to have a working phone again.

I finally did a complete uninstall, did a Clean Master process to clear memory and files, rebooted, and then re-installed the app. So far, no repeat of the error message when I start Google Maps.

For future reference that's commonly referred to as Recovery Mode.

I gave my old Valet to my Dad. He said he was getting the "unfortunately Google..." thing.
It was fine when it left here.
Also, it looks like he tried to set up a home screen password and screwed it up.
The box is there to type the password in but I can't get a keyboard to come up to type the password.
    Any ideas?

I'm considering a factory reset. Will I lose the Tracfone service? Is there a sim card I should remove? (I don't see one under the battery or anywhere obvious).
If I lose service will it be much trouble to get it back online through My Account? Will I lose the minutes?

    I hate Apple.
    iPhone 5 on Tracfone BYOP.
    iPhone 4 for backup.
Retired Moto G (I really miss Android)

No SIM in the Valet. No, the reset won't affect service.

You will have to setup accounts and reinstall apps.

From what I recall from a few years back, hpham factory reset his ZTE Valet and lost his Tracfone service. It was a bug unique to that model only.

Send him a PM to confirm before you do the reset, or if you already did the reset, let us know what happened.
    Cheers!

I did not personally do a reset on my old Valet. But there were several people who reported on Turk Forums and on Amazon that they lost service after resetting their Valets. They had to spend a lot of time with TF support to get their service restored.

    @Brian VT,
If your Dad can get into the phone, tell him to go into Settings-->Apps-->select the Google Play Store app and click on Clear Cache. That usually fixes the problem with the error "Unfortunately....". Sometimes Google Play tries to update too many apps at the same time and gets itself all tangled up.

Went fine. It didn't loose TF service.
Now I'd like to turn off some Google crap but I don't want to root it.

Dad, nor myself, could get in. That's why I had to reset.
I did get one "Unfortunately..." after the reset and I did clear the cache then.
Good so far. I'll use it all day tomorrow and see how it goes.
    Thanks.

Go to Settings - Apps and see if you can disable them. Be careful which ones you do. You don't want to disable critical apps. Glad you survived the factory reset. Valet is better than Craptura.

These are some Google apps that I disabled on my L41C with no ill-effects.

If I remember right from my old Valet, you have to download an app from the Play Store. Used to be ZTE Proximity Sensor Calibration, but I can't find it anymore, not sure if it was taken down or the fix was included in a patch, zte Valet had 1 update to fix a security issue with android 4.1
