Text USAGE to 611611 to check data usage on ST!

I got a text from ST saying:
"You can now check on your data usage at any time! Text USAGE to 611611".

I did text USAGE to 611611 and got:
"Your data usage is estimated. Reply 'Y' to accept the terms and conditions of this service. Click for Terms (link). Reply 'STOP' to opt out."

    I texted "Y":
"Thank you for accepting. Your usage will be sent shortly."

    A few minutes later:
"Based upon data available for your account as of 2014-03-01, estimated usage is X.XMB since your last refill. Terms click (link).

I'm glad ST added this feature! Should have been added a long time ago!!

How does ST estimate compare to your own??

Estimated? With them saying estimated, that means they can guess a number and say that's it. Its a shame they can't actually provide accurate data usage under your account online. When I check my data balance and usage on Verizon Prepaid, I get an accurate number. Not a guess..

That's actually inaccurate. It will always be estimated, no matter the carrier, because it's virtually impossible to give an exact number. Your Verizon Prepaid account is also an estimate, because you could be using data to check your data usage, and that data has yet to be added to your total.

In other words, data usage can't be real time. It will never be.

This 611611 also works on NET10 network also. I just tried it on my galaxy s4 and it sent me my data usage using 611611. So for all of you Net10 customers that need to check your data usage try 611611 and type in usage in the message block.

It is actually about 24 hours behind. They are upfront about it.

Well I have heard everyone speculate about this and what they mean by estimate just means that its not an up to the second number... computers keep track of everything very accurately.. if your data usage measured by your device is different its simply because your device may take into account acknowledgement packets etc and your carrier may not and vice versa .. just trying to shed some light on the subject ;-) Also, I would trust your carriers numbers before I would trust your devices although the carriers measurement may not be up to the minute but think about it... do you think they are going to go by what your device says or by what their system says... just saying.. BTW ST gives you 3GB data now before they throttle you not sure if you guys knew that or not I know this is semi old post...

I don't believe any provider will be able to provide an EXACT reading of the data usage up to that same moment.

For example, the My Verizon app for Verizon customers, itself uses data, to tell the customer how much data they've used.

Straight Talk says it's an estimate of your usage and yes, they are up front about it.
