Ultimate iPhone Setup Guide for Wind

    Hey everyone!

In lieu of the launch of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, I figured it would be a good time to finally put together a guide for all Wind customers on how to get an iPhone working perfectly on Wind. I've been on Wind for over 2 years now and have been using the iPhone 5S on Wind for the past 1 year. I will describe in which ways you need to set all the settings on the phone so as to have a perfect iPhone experience close to those people using it on the Big 3. These instructions will work for iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Screenshots will be added soon once I meet Hofo tenure.

    STEP 1: FACTORY RESTORE & INSTALL NANO-SIM

Fresh restore is the best way to start and will reduce connectivity or software issues. Ensure you have an active wifi connection during this process as cellular data will not work just yet and will be needed to se

    1. Perform a factory restore.
    2. Pop in your Wind mobile nano-SIM card.
    3. Walkthrough the usual iPhone setup and reach the home screen.

STEP 2: EDIT CELLULAR SETTINGS TO ENABLE WIND DATA & WIND MMS

This is mandatory to enable data and allow for MMS functionality. Once connected, you will have full data access for all your apps.

    1. Click on the Settings icon on your home screen.
    2. Tap the Cellular option, beneath Bluetooth and above Personal Hotspot.
    3. Once on the Cellular screen, tap the Cellular Data Network option, beneath Data Roaming.
    4. There are two sections here. First is Cellular Data. Enter internet.windmobile.ca in the APN field.
    5. In the second section called MMS, enter MMS.windmobile.ca in the APN field. Also enter http(colon)//mms.windmobile.ca under MMSC and 74.115.197.70:8080 under MMS Proxy.
    6. In the top left corner you can navigate back to the main settings page which will save these settings. You are now connected to Wind 3G and have full access to data!

STEP 3: SET CARRIER SETTINGS TO ENABLE BEST NETWORK CONNECTION (OPTIONAL)

Automatic network connection mode is a battery vampire. This setting will disable roaming by only connecting your phone to the Wind Network so as to prevent the phone from connecting to Wind Away which is often a stronger connection compared to Wind and save battery power trying to search for available networks each time you reboot your device. Try it for yourself to see what is best for you.

    1. Click on the Settings icon on your home screen.
    2. Tap on the Carrier option.
    3. Switch the Automatic switch to off or white. Wait a moment for your phone to detect the available networks.
    4. Once ready, your screen should present you with available networks to connect to, regardless of your SIM provider. Tap on WIND.
    5. In the top left corner you can navigate back to the main settings page which will save these settings. You are now connected to Wind 3G and will never go on roaming!

STEP 4: ACTIVATE YOUR WIND NUMBER FOR USE WITH iMESSAGE (AND FACETIME)

iMessage is a proprietary messaging service by Apple which uses your email address as your username. However, on the Big 3 networks, you can also use your cell phone number. The reason for this is that when activating iMessage for the first time, background processes on the device connect to Apple servers to register your number as your username. The benefit here is to allow you to hide your email from others and allow for a more seemless SMS-like texting experience similar to Whatsapp. In order to get your Wind number registered to iMessage, you will need to assist the background processes a little to make it work, as they cannot do it on their own like on the Big 3 networks.

A solution has been found by one of our members smcclay. Link coming soon.

The solution has been down for months now to activate iMessage, I have been in touch with him and we have had no success in getting iMessage + FaceTime activated, unless things changed, I haven't checked back with him in 2 weeks now approx.

Thanks for writing out the guide in great detail, I'm sure many future users will appreciate the simplicity.

Thank you for the update. I was unaware of this.

It appears I am unable to edit the guide now. I suppose this is a forum limitation. I will try to make an update.

A solution had been found by one of our members smcclay however Wind has foolishly blocked/disabled the process which allowed the device to send/receive the necessary message from the Apple servers to make this work. Now a phone number cannot be activated for use with iMessage, but email addresses still work. So in effect, you can still USE iMessage AND Facetime, just not with the caller ID or username being your phone number. Recepients will see your email address when you message/call them.

Might I also suggest setting the APN for personal hot spot. Otherwise it won't work it seems. Took me a bit to figure that out.

APN is required for hotspot too? I wasn't aware of that. I will test that out and include it in the next update.

It seems with iOS 8 APN for hotspot is required -- on iOS 7 I never had anything in that field and it worked just fine.

Many carriers use dual APN's now thanks to VoLTE so they even have a spot for LTE APN separate.

Interesting. Yes, after your post I began checking out the sticky thread for Wind internet settings. You're right. It does appear it is required. Good info!

Yeah. What a weird thing to change. Thought at first it wasn't going to work at all as it said to contact the carrier to set it up.

Curious if you guys know why the iPhone doesn't pick up the apn settings like other phones do?

My iPhone 5 will work in some areas, but it will not work at home or at school. The carriers at home show WInd Away, Bell, Rogers and Telus. Wind tech support has not been able to help with this, other than to say manually select WInd and turn the phone off and then on. I really need a cell service that will work at home, any other ideas? I also selected 3G. Is the iPhone 5 not a good phone for Wind, or am I at the end of the border of towers? They say I live in a good area for Wind. I would appreciate any help…? Thank you!

The iPhone doesn't know wind's APN settings cause it doesn't have a carrier file with the information. The iPhone picks up that wind is an unsupported carrier and then uses a generic carrier file which has no info and leaves it upto the user to enter it.

Your iPhone should be as good as any other phone for picking up signal. I would find a friend who is with wind and invite them over as a test. I would suspect there is either something blocking the signal causing it to be weaker or you are just in a pocket of limited service.
