Thumbs up New Android keitai Flip phone: Sharp Aquos SH-06G

DoCoMo announced the Sharp Aquos SH-06G. This is an Android 4.4 KitKat device.

It’s meant to debut in stores in late June and it brings special carrier features like DoCoMo email and special social networking services. From what I’ve heard this model doesn’t have Google Play Store, so that’s a bit of a drawback. This model comes with a wateproof body, a 3.4 inch qHD TFT LCD screen and a secondary 0.9 inch display for notifications.

There’s a 5 megapixel main camera here, a Snapdragon dual core 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage. We’ve got a microSD card slot on board, a 1410 mAh battery and the product weighs 123 grams. It measures 16.4 mm in thickness, so it’s quite hefty.

    Main stuff:

    1) It doesn't have a touchscreen

    2) It does run Android, but it still is a feature phone

    3) It looks like it's main competitor is the Aquos K-SHF31 (go to this thread to compare them if you want to).

Android Base? thats mean it's still feature phone but can use 3G outside Japan?

It's still a bit early to have actual user feedback, but I'd expect one of the things Sharp/Docomo have removed from the standard Android interface is the "New APN" setting. So, in order to use 3G outside Japan, you need to hack your way inside this setting to be able to input your carriers APN data. Just saying...

Otherwise, I am disappointed by this now clear trend of turning traditional keitais into low-end devices: underpowered and unimpressive camera. And no touch-screen, meh!

By the way, Fujitsu's F-05G isn't any better: WVGA display, no LTE, but 8.1 MP camera, 1700 mAh battery, both water-proof and dust-proof. Not sure if it's touch-screen or not. Again based on Android 4.4.

Both water and dust proof: YES
Both lacking osaifu-keitai: WTF Docomo? Why remove such a basic Japanese feature, on "feature" phones? Guess they had to cut corners somehow to keep prices down. The AU version is thus superior (also as mentioned superior camera too), HOWEVER reports are that battery life isn't much better than a normal smartphone due to the 1400mAh battery + presence of LTE.

I expect these 2 Docomo keitais will have better battery life due to having 3G only and probably being slightly more limited.

AU KDDI has also released a new Android-based flip-keitai, and it is better in terms of specs than Docomo's SH-06G: The main difference is the quad-core processor (1.2 Ghz) -- versus the SH-06G's dual-core 1.2 GHz -- and the 13.1-megapixel camera -- versus the SH-06G's 5-megapixel one: http://sharp.cheeseus.org/device.php?devID=134

And LTE (even VoLTE) and osaifu-keitai (both which matter or will matter, in Japan, not to people importing phones to their own country, though)

I would have to have a working internet connection on this, and at the very least, Google services. If I can get those things, and a day's use, then I might get one... how much?

Yes, you can install all APPs you want. Even Google Play.
And it has mobile data working. So it's a normal smartphone.
    430USD including unlock and shipping

Even Google Play? And Google Play Services? Nice

    2 questions
1- how does that impact battery life?

2- is there a howto that explains it, please?

    Thanks,
    Patrix.
