    Cisco 7940 series phone

I can buy a Cisco 7940 series IP phone for a few bucks. Are these of any use to an individual or are they something that can only be used as part of a professional system?

As a standalone phone, you'll need a TFTP server to connect to provide the phone with all the software it needs to function. And you will also need to flash the software to SIP to get the most out of the phone because the proprietary Cisco software SCCP makes reliant on having a license to it. These are fun to tinker with if you have the time. I picked one up and had it hooked up to Broadvoice for a bit since they provided my Voip and remote TFTP. Bottom line, probably worth it if you want a hobby.
