I'm wondering if it Freedom had picked it up if it would have helped them with all their issues in the GTA?

It wouldn't cure their problems, but it would help...

It would give them twice the capacity, without much work...

I suspect, they weren't even given the opportunity...

This smells like a strategic deal to me...

Quebecor originally bought that spectrum for $96.4 million in 2008, and got to sell it now for $184 million 9 years later. That's a pretty good return on investment from spectrum that they were only able to get so cheaply as a result of it being set aside from the incumbents, so other companies could use that spectrum to foster greater competition in the wireless carrier market.

I wonder how much more money Quebecor will make when they eventually sell their 700 MHz spectrum outside of Quebec and Eastern Ontario to Rogers too?

They really should be forced to return it back to the government with no refund for failing the use it or lose it test and then have another auction for it.
    Bell SK+fongo:
$85 Unlimited NA, NA text, US Roaming, 15GB

    Chatrlicity:
$30 Unlimited NAM , $30 Unlimited Province Wide

Agreed. Or at least sell it to freedom if not.

"The transaction has been approved by the competent regulatory authorities." *

Spectrum is the lifeblood of a new entrant. How is it the sale to an incumbent of what was set aside for new entrants been approved by the regulators??

ISED Minister Bains was surely aware of this impending announcement when he gave his speech to the CTS Monday, proclaiming his government's commitment to the consumer and affordable wireless options.

    Disgusting.

    Yep...

It would have given Freedom 20 minutes of hope...

Rogers locked Quebecor into the deal 4 years ago, and they consummated the deal now...

    It's upsetting...

Rogers may have made a deal with Quebecor, but the licence transfer still needed the government's approval.

    --
"This is great news for consumers," said David Watt, Rogers senior vice-president, regulatory.
    CBC

Ted Woodhead, senior vice-president of federal government and regulatory affairs at Telus, called the transaction “spectrum trafficking” in a tweet following the news, asserting that Quebecor profited $88 million from the deal.

    True...

It's disappointing that a regulator didn't shut down this deal...

I thought there were rules for selling spectrum that was set aside for new entrants.

Hope this doesn't go through. Rogers doesn't need any new spectrum.
