Can we text 911? (Here in the US)

I had to call 911 the other day about a crash that happened in front of me, but it got me to thinking... If I was in a position where calling 911 isn't available (such as a home break-in or something like that) would texting 911 work on AT&T's United States network? Not sure if you can do this with other US networks like Verizon.

    Thanks guys.

It's extremely localized and there isn't a nationwide standard for text-2-911. You would have to check with your municipality to see if it's available in your specific area, and definitely don't count on it being available everywhere in the US. Some states have it implemented but a voice call is recommended if possible because text to 911 will not provide any type of location.

Yeah, it's not carrier based. It will only work if your local dispatch center is setup to accept 911 texts.

Good question. Hope it's made nation-wide.
As a US citizen I have the right to criticize my government. My thanks for this is endless in magnitude. I fear fascism is here in the US. [fascism: government led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition & criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., & emphasizing an aggressive nationalism & often racism]

Agreed with the idea, but the problem is there is an infrastructure charge to implement it and not all municipalities have the funds to do so quickly.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

It is available where I live.
    Oakland County Michigan.
    Text to 911.

I have not had to use it.
I have heard on some news stories that people have used it.
