Is it possible to tether an iphone to an ipad to steam a movie?

I have both an iPhone 5 running ios 10 w/ netflix and an unlimited data plan. Is there a way I can tether my ipad to my iphone to watch movies on a bigger screen?

Depends on the provisions of your service plan.

Airplay or Airplay mirror might work. Maybe a MHL cable.

If your carrier allows tethering/hotspot, you just set it up under settings/cellular/set up personal hotspot. Then you can use your iPhone as a hotspot device and connect your iPad via WiFi.

If both devices are signed in with the same iCloud Apple ID, you can use the “Instant Hotspot” feature of continuity and handoff:

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my contract says I can't do the personal hotspot thing, although these other options sound interesting.

Any other opinions on Airplay or Airplay Mirror? or on continuity and handoff?

Airplay requires that both devices be on the same Wi-Fi network. If you already have a Wi-Fi connection with the iPad, you do not need the iPhone in the loop.

Airplay works over Wi-Fi between an iOS device and an AppleTV for example:

    Not between iOS devices.

Yes I maybe should've added that I don't plan on being in wifi range when I try to use the ipad for the big screen. Looks like airplay won't work. How about this continuity or handoff idea?

Each device must be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID. Since you would have no connection with your iPad away from Wi-Fi, any Continuity feature would be unavailable.
