New MintSIM rates make no sense

2Gb is $15/month if you buy 3 months
But it's $18/month if you buy 6 months
goes back down to $15/month if you buy 12 months

Other data amounts do the same thing.

Why would anyone buy the 6 month deal vs buying the 3 month deal twice??

Still, those are dirt cheap rates and I'll be switching from Cricket on my next cycle.

Because they'll likely raise the 3 month price sometime in the next 3 months....

People in the MintSIM thread have also been saying speeds are being throttled or heavy congested. Some guy on prepaidphone news was saying he was getting less than 1mbps download but like 19 upload.

Ah. Hadn't considered that. I may buy the whole year, then. Sure, it's on T-Mo, but $15/month for 2GB is the lowest I've seen.

Hm. I see you're on Red Pocket, which is my other option. No issues with throttling?

It makes sense if they want people on 3 month plans, think about it.

I am on Red Pocket AT&T and they don't throttle AT&T at least. I was pulling 20 mbps download but I didn't finish the upload portion because I didn't care for the upload portion.

Yup, anyone interested in Mint should check out this hofo thread:

If you are in an area where there are few users you may have no issues, but it seems that Mint is heavily deprioritized for data if the towers are somewhat busy. Unusable data was a consistent and daily reproducible feature during prime time usage in the Houston/Galveston area. I was forced to port out a month early after paying for the 3 month promo. Buyer beware.

3 or 4 people claiming they're being throttled to a crawl isn't exactly overwhelming evidence of heavy deprioritization. More likely it's a congested or poor T-Mobile area which would also be seen on their pure plan which would make T-Mobile or their mvno's a poor choice to begin with. Other issues could be at work and considering there's many congested T-Mobile areas I'm surprised we're not hearing more of this. Haven't seen much chatter on reddit either.

That's not to say they don't throttle. I'm pulling 20 down when I know speeds would be faster on pure T-Mobile. That's perfectly acceptable.

Nothing to do with Mint, but I have a regular T-mobile prepaid line and a net10 line that runs on T-Mobile, and the T-mobile one is positively faster, all things being equal, location, phone ect. Not saying net 10 is unusable, but I think T-mobile mvnos aren't given free reign like they may have once had. Just protecting their branded customers a little better I presume.

You can't buy the 3 months deal twice.

I agree on your first point, I can only provide my own observations as a somewhat knowledgeable & tech savvy computer / smartphone user. I've been through Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and various MVNOs in the name of trying to save the almighty $. That said, all my evidence is strictly anecdotal.

I disagree with your point about poor coverage. I know for a fact the areas around Houston that I work have outstanding coverage. All the carriers have superior coverage here in Houston. Mint Sim data is just very unreliable and often unusable in a major metropolitan area, reproducible throughout the day as the masses awake from slumber and begin hitting the towers. In multiple locations, at that. It makes sense to me that the towers here are very crowded and that regular T-Mbl customers would get priority over cheapo MVNOs, but I cannot say for sure why Mint slows to a crawl during prime time. So take the observations of a few of us here for what it's worth.
