    Thuraya coverage in N. America

Does Thuraya have a satellite signal covering N. America or does this map show GSM roaming coverage? I can't find any information about a 3rd Thuraya satellite covering N. America; just the two covering Eurasia and N. Africa.

I got a reply from Thuraya. The map above is very misleading. It shows a new M2M service footprint in N. America (which is apparently offered in partnership with ViaSat). They don't offer voice or data service in N. America.

You can put your GSM sim into a Thuraya phone and use it in North America, but you can't use satellite service on it.

The description of the XT-PRO says "the phone supports most 2G/3G frequencies across the world." I assume this includes at least 850 & 1900, but using a Thuraya phone for as a GSM/UMTS phone is just giving up features and capabilities of your existing 2G/3G/4G smart phone.

The point is that Thuraya did not suddenly stand up satellite service in North America and you can't just carry a Thuraya phone with your existing carrier's SIM when you go backpacking out in the Idaho or Montana mountains, where there's no cell coverage or sailing down islands.
