Leaving for 6 months: What should I do?

I'm on the MB/SK plan and have loved being on it, but I'll be out of the country for about 6 months and I don't think it makes sense to pay $50/month for nothing.

I would LIKE to keep my number, but that isn't the end of the world. I believe they have a "pause" option but I think that is $15/month and that seems outrageous just to keep the #.

    1) Is there another way I can keep my number, cheaper?
    2) Any ideas about getting back on the plan/should I go for something else when I return? Of course who knows what things will be like in 6 months but I imagine it's not EASIER, especially as I am already on koodo (i recall you might need to port out then back in?)

You can port to prepaid, and you will have keep the line activated some how. Not sure if you have to top up every month but at least your number will stay active. By porting or putting the line on hold($15/month) will result in the plan lost so when you comeback, hopefully the loophole still exist and you will have to start everything over.

Currently $49 6GB QC plan is the hot plan and stays on promo most of the time...but you never know when the offer and/or the loophole will end.

On Koodo prepaid $15 every 3 months will hold your number.
The $20 for a SIM will cover up to 119 days from activation.

When you activate online you'll find a $20 credit balance.
Choose the $15 msg only base plan - 30 days service.
The number is released upon 90 days of suspension.

    Don't forget when you're away!
    Calendar 3 months + 2 weeks from last top-up.

I would just suck it up and keep your plan as is or risk loosing your plan if there isn't an equivalent when you come back

I thought about it, but that is literally just throwing away $330... Seems like a big waste no?

Depends on the person! I do not have that kind of money to just throw around like that. I would port my number to prepaid pay the minimum so I can to keep the number activated and then when the time comes, hopefully the plan is there otherwise I would get the best plan available then....I would keep paying if it was couple months may be but 6 months would be a lot of money...

I can see both points of view but you have to consider the difference in price if you come back and only have a share everything plan option starting at $100 and it costs you double ... you would be kicking yourself then in the long term. I don't see cell phone plans getting cheaper any time soon

Suck it up and keep it. You're not going to get a better plan unless you go to Freedom Mobile
