    Band 66 sightings thread

Since the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 are now out, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for any Band 66 sightings. Personally I'm waiting for the iPhone X, so I won't be able to report anything until November at the earliest. However, most of the cell site construction and upgrade permits I've seen this year show Band 66 antennas in the details.

I assume Field Test should show "66" as "Freq Band Indicator". However since it's a sub-band of band 4, way may not get any indication.

    Here's a nice explanation of Band 66: http://www.phonescoop.com/glossary/term.php?gid=570

Like AT&T, Verizon may deploy MFBI on B4/66. In my area, Verizon's EARFCN on B4 is 2100. With MFBI, EARFCN would be 66586. They have 10x10 AWS-3 J Block in my area and the EARFCN on AWS-3 B66 should be 67086 (1775/2175).

I wondered if they would use MFBI, too. It makes sense. Right now I think it's just going to waste. They have 10 MHz in my area. I can't use it. But S8 owners and many others can.

It’s not a subset. It’s a superset and you would definitely see 66 in field test. You might see 4 labeled as 66 though. You will need to know your EARFCN for B4 (AWS blocks A-F) and B66 (AWS blocks G through J... also includes A-F)

iPhone 7 doesn't support Band 66 so that phone will always show Band 4.

No. And most of the phones that support only band 4 today can't support the higher frequencies of 66 even with a software update. I'm not sure any of them can, actually. It's a shame.

EDIT: But that doesn't mean band 4 phones can't park on a carrier that uses band 66. The feature is called MFBI. Band 4 only phones would see band 4. Band 66 phones see the remaining spectrum and can use it, as well.

1775/2175 is AWS-1 B4. The phone will display the earfcn and not the actual UL/DL frequency.

Are you sure? Sure looks like 1775/2175 is AWS-3 block J to me(?).

Positive. You have to know the EARFCN of the given AWS-3 spectrum in your area. The EARFCN is not to be confused with the actual upload/download frequency. Here is an example I tested on AT&T in Gaylord, Michigan. While locking out B4, MFBI was enabled showing 66. These are actually one in the same frequencies on AWS-1. Not AWS-3 B66.
