Shentel Announces Completion of the Transformation of nTelos into the Sprint Affiliat

Content/Source from Globe News Wire and Shenandoah Telecommunications. I don't own anything.

EDINBURG, Va., Oct. 02, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (“Shentel” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:SHEN) is pleased to announce that on September 30th it completed the upgrade of the former nTelos network from 3G to 4G LTE, along with the migration of the former nTelos customers to the Sprint billing system.* This completes the transformation of the former nTelos wireless service area, acquired by Shentel in May 2016, to the Sprint Affiliate model in seventeen months, a full quarter ahead of schedule.**

Shentel committed $240 million for the initial network upgrade and coverage expansion.* As of September 30, Shentel has upgraded 854 sites to 4G LTE, added 800 MHz coverage and capacity; decommissioned 99 overlapping sites; and added 2.5GHz capacity to 197 sites.** As planned, Shentel will have built 60% of the 220 additional coverage sites in West Virginia and southern Virginia by year end 2017, with the remaining 40% to be built in 2018. By the end of 2018, Shentel will have the largest 4G LTE wireless coverage area in its West Virginia and southern Virginia Affiliate area.

Shentel completed the migration of the nTelos prepaid customers to the Sprint billing system in December 2016.* The Company migrated postpaid customers in 2016 and 2017, completing the process on September 30th.* The Company is pleased to have migrated approximately 65% of the prepaid and 73% of the postpaid former nTelos customers to Sprint, while at the same time having rebuilt the entire acquired network.

On this milestone, President and CEO Chris French commented: “I am extremely proud of our employees’ accomplishments in transforming the former nTelos wireless network into the state-of-the-art 4G LTE network our Sprint customers can enjoy today.* They were able to complete the project on budget and ahead of schedule, allowing us to take full advantage of the fourth quarter selling season.* The Company has launched the biggest advertising campaign in its history touting the new and expanded network.”

The Company will provide additional details in its upcoming third quarter earnings call.

I have always thought Shentel would do a good job running all of Sprint.

Sprint covers Southeastern WV as well as the whole state better than Verizon or USCC and is almost as good as AT&T. I always have 3 to 5 bars indoors with Bands 25 & 26. I get good voice reception and I'm always connected to LTE. I get decent download speeds of 7 to 15 mbps indoors and 17 to 30 mbps outdoors . They have pretty much overbuilt USCC's Market In Eastern WV and Central/ SW VA. In the last 2 years they have added 2 towers in my area and over 3 months ago I spotted a new array with at least 3 panels on an AT&T site a mile and a half from my house which is either Sprint or T-Mobile since they also have a 700 MHz, PCS, AWS-1 and of course 600 MHz license in my area and T-Mo Band 12 towers have 3 panels on them. I went by that site last month with my Sprint phone and was still roaming on USCC and also tested T-Mo there as well but it was roaming on AT&T. So I'm guessing it just hasn't been activated yet.

is Shentel and independently operated company but owned by Sprint? I read Shentel bought nTelos, but Sprint takes control of the spectrum?

Shentel Announces Completion of the Transformation of nTelos into the Sprint ...

They are a SprintPCS affiliate and they do a real good job building out good coverage, keeping their network up and rolling out new technology. http://welcometoshentel.com/about-shentel/

Shentel is an affiliate. They build and operate their own network using Sprint's licenses and market their network using the Sprint brand. Sprint handles all of the billing and customer service issues. It's almost like a Sprint franchisee that owns its own towers.

There used to be many more affiliates, but most got bought out by Sprint during the Nextel merger, as well as Nextel Partners which was the same idea for Nextel.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but nTelos and Shentel were the last two left — and nTelos also sold under their own brand name.... so now Shentel is the last remaining affiliate.

By large, most all of the affiliates used to suck and were responsible for some of the worst coverage on the Sprint network, plus they never participated in national sales promos. Shentel was one of the few good ones, and appears to have been profitable since they didn’t allow a buy out during the last merger... it may happen this time thought — the affiliate deals in the case of a buy out are absolutely awesome for them... that was one of the more expensive parts of the merger last time.
