With a port in. 50 plus tax plus first month of service yep. Without a port in it's 149 for the 32gb se. You should be able to get the 16gb se for 29 with port in. Not all stores carry the 16gb model though.

The iPhones are $49 each, plus applicable sales tax and/activation fees.

Depends where you live. It's sales tax. Also depends on if the store taxes the regular price of 149 of the sale price of 49. I've seen stores do both. I've seen stores tax the full price then apply the discount, and I've seen stores tax just the discount price.

I know how much they'd be just wondering if they took taxes from 149 or 49

Depends on the store, like I've said I've seen both. The majority though charge taxes on the discounted price.

I’m in MA. I paid on the $149 original price.

I looked up the topic on the MA DOR website and they have a specific section on cellular phones. Bottom line is the vendor can determine how much sales tax to collect from the customer, especially on discounted/sale items. IOW, they can choose to eat some of the tax or not.

I didn't complain about it because I didn't get charged for a SIM or activation. I figure it's pretty much a wash in terms of out of pocket.

There’s zero consistency between Metro stores.

Yea, usually it's based off the original price. I've seen stores include an actually free phone or eat the tax.

I believe this pricing is not happening anymore but iphone SE is still only $99 after the $100 discount on since it is now $199 normaly.
