Hotspots on unlimited plan—no longer allowed effective 12/05/2017

I saw this tidbit on my bill today. I wonder if this will affect existing users already using these devices?

    NOTICE OF DEVICE ELIGIBILITY
Please note that as of 12/05/2017, AT&T Wireless Home Phone & Internet and dedicated mobile hotspot devices will no longer be eligible devices for the AT&T Unlimited Plus or AT&T Unlimited Choice plan.

It was bound to happen. $20 for home ISP is pretty ridiculous. (as in a great deal) Glad I kept my 500GB plan and didn't change it like everyone else was.

I don't see what difference it makes. As far as I know the 500gb plan has already been cancelled so you're relying on grandfathering the same as those currently on unlimited will be.

It's not been cancelled, as you can get it in specific markets. And it says ineligible, meaning current devices will need to have their plans changed as they move them off of the UL plans. Sounds like they're going have new hotspot plans.

    Wonder if that means all.
Or will they grandfather them too?

You're in good company. I sure hope they grandfather the hotspots on unlimited plus.

It says it pretty plainly. Devices will not be eligible. The lingo doesn't imply or hint that grandfathered will be an option. If that was the case, it would say something to the affect of "Devices will not be able to be added after 12/5" not "These devices will be ineligible."

Then why the heck did AT&T allow these on the unlimited plans in the first place?

I really thought AT&T was heading in a good direction. These plans made great sense for people in rural areas. No, the unlimited hotspot and WHPI made no sense for anyone that lived in a city with access to cable or fiber optic Internet. But rural areas, where AT&T landline refuses to upgrade their landline infrastructure, this made perfect sense.

Sure, you potentially get deprioritized after using a certain amount of data (22GB) but if you are in the middle of no where, the chances of the tower being congested is slim, so you don't really notice the deprioritization. But in a city, yea I'd fully expect to see the deprioritization.

Someone at AT&T needs to be fired if they are really cutting existing devices on these plans. It never should have been allowed in the first place if they weren't prepared to handle this.

Someone on Reddit just said they contacted ATT and they told him that they are involuntarily removing devices on the plan and rolling out a new plan in November. Also, they are not waiving ETFs despite being under contract. They told him that the devices will go on the "advantage plan" until new plans are released in November.

I live in an area that's rural enough we can barely get DSL, and Verizon's towers are pretty congested. AT&T's towers aren't usually congested though, since just about everyone around here has Verizon. AT&T's unlimited data is the best deal available around here…but they caught on that it is too good of a deal :-(
