I know this isn't exactly satellite service but, Project Loon recently announced that they are partnering with AT&T and T-Mobile to augment LTE service in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. They had to obtain an experimental license from the FCC because existing Loon platforms are designed to operate in the 900 MHz LTE band-8 used in most of the world, outside of N. America. They aren't anticipating that this will restore Mbps data service to every remote corner of PR but it can help with calls, texts and limited data.

I had been vaguely aware of Project Loon but not so much as to the details. I think it would hold considerable promise for delivery of service to remote areas of the US, Canada and Mexico, provided that the frequencies could be sorted out over wide areas.
