    Perhaps a corrupted file.

There are also plenty of other word-processing programs that can work with Word files (e.g. LibreOffice). If it useless try to fix word file here: onlinefilerepair.com

Just upload the file and reopen it.

The iPhone has no native ability to open ,docx files. You need a third-party application. Even older versions of Word cannot open new .docx files.

Sorry you are wrong. I open .docx files daily with my 6S. Nothing special about it.

Word documents in docx format can be viewed within the Safari browser or using Pages once it has been downloaded. Pages is an add-on word processing program which has not always been included with the iOS software. It was included with the large iOS applications downloads of Pages, Numbers, Clips and GarageBand. Many users deleted those apps because of the storage space they used. GarageBand alone uses 1.69 gigabytes. and Pages uses 395 megabytes.

IOS 11 has the ability to offload app when not in use., which is designed to free up space. No need to delete.

docx (along with a bunch of other file formats) is natively supported in iOS and does not require download of any optional apps such as MS Word or Apple Pages.
