AT&T Says It Will Be FIRST To Roll Out 5G This Year

“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

Only 12 markets? Seems a little lackluster and a poor attempt to claim a first. I'll be more interested when a carrier is able to flip the switch nationwide.

My money is on that this is actually more 4.5/4.9G technology being steadily deployed by other carriers that they'll claim is "5G" simply because some theoretical speeds are faster than standard LTE. I could also see them just loading up 4-5CA with a bunch of their LTE carriers and claim 5G even though that's just simply maximizing current 4G architecture.

The nation's top 4 carriers are all putting out their 5G marketing campaigns hard and early.

As a mobile enthusiast (first and foremost) I want to see 5G on my mobile devices primarily but then want to see it other connected devices like my car, house etc. down the road.

I'll evaluate the fixed 5G options if I'm lucky enough to have one in my neighborhood anytime soon.

I'm the most excited about vehicular 5G being used for traffic regulation.

Spectrum Omega does not show the 24 & 39 GHz mmWave Spectrum that AT&T acquired from FiberTower. However, AT&T has not yet announced what spectrum will be used for their 5G - in addition to the acquired spectrum from FiberTower.

This is T-Mobile plans for 5G

"T-Mobile’s move to test high bandwidth backhaul comes as the operator pushes toward its goal of deploying a*fully mobile 5G network by 2020. The operator said it plans to use its new 600MHz spectrum assets alongside its mid-band airwaves and 200MHz of spectrum in the 28GHz and 39GHz bands to achieve its goal. T-Mobile already began densifying its network as part of the 5G effort, with plans to*roll out 2,000 more small cellsthis year and an additional 25,000 by the end of 2018."

"T-Mobile also owns holds a nationwide license for the 70/80/90 GHz bands. They need the FCC approval to use it"

Sounds like that time when AT&T said they were 4G while actually being 3G.
In a world full of Droids, I'm a shiny Apple.

You mean when they followed what T-Mobile started?

Lol, yep exactly. Except this time they've learned and ate determined to be first with the shenanigans.
