You will get charged if your contract isn't up. Other than that, to the best of my knowledge, they can't charge you for keeping your number.

T-mobile and VZW are already advertising number portability on nov 24 on their web sites main page. I can't wait to leave att on that day.
It seems Tmobile and VZW wont charge to join them, but will ATT charge me to leave them and hold on to my old number?

that's my understanding, too...that's why there charging extra on everyone's bill, because they can't charge you when you leave *boo, hiss*
i say if they have a mass exodus of people running to other carriers, then they need to rethink their rates/policies/service

sweet. good thing my contract is up in nov. maybe att should start by getting a website that works.
maybe you need to get a better computer or an isp that works. im on taht site daily and have noticed twice over the last 8 motnhs it was down or had problems.

Most of it works, but try and visit their forums right now. Page gives a 404 error.Originally posted by cmendenh

When I click on "Upgrade your phone" so I can see what my upgrade options are, I get an error.
When I try to log in, it take me to another page, and I have to enter all the information again.
Other than that it works OK.
im posting on the forums right now along with a bunch of others

then click on the "Customer Forums" link at the top. It's still broken.
I posted a formal comment to the FCC about this one.
I have service with Verizon, under contract until next June. I'd like GSM service with AT&T, and want my number ported to AT&T -- but I'm still willing to keep my Verizon contract and phone up and running.
Can't Verizon just issue me a new number? That way my Verizon number gets ported to AT&T, but I'm now paying for two contracts?
So far, every carrier I've asked about this seems to think that number portability = contract termination.
Does anyone know if this has been thought about?
it should work but not in the way you want it to. port the number over and then call verizon and reinstate your phone with a new number. Its kinda the same thing if your cancelled for a while and your number gets recycled to someone else. you basically call back and reinstate with a new number. I dont think they can just "take" the number without cancelling it. but nothing about not being able to reinstate it.

If I was getting crank calls on my Verizon phone, they could assign me a new number, no problem. Why should I have to go through reinstatement?![]()
Ahh, the craziness of the wireless biz.![]()
LPN is not so magical as everyone makes it out to be. It still effects only two people, new customers and people not under contract. If you are under contract expect to pay out the ETF fee plus the months service and any fees for the LPN ability. The FCC rules are vague and it will not be a fun time come November 24 the worse week in the US to launch such a massive system on the wireless business. I can tell you this the LPN stuff from SPCS and ATTWs will come about in early November for training. No wireless company is ready for this, if they say they are, and post it on their website its all bravado making it look like they are ready for new customer to leave company A and go to company B.
its going to be a MINIMUM of 4 hours to fully port a number....most people who walk into a wireless store expect to walk out in 15 min with a working phone...its going to be HELL
I don't understand how it only affects two people. Can you please clarify? Wouldn't it also affect people that are under contract and want to leave their wireless carriers.Originally posted by mulletwireless

ok so i talked to a guy at an AWE store and he told me that ATT is so confident that they will actually attract customers come nov 24 because they apparently are going to roll out completely different different plans on nov1. so keep an eye out.
can anyone in NYC confirm with me that T-mobile has far and away better service than ATT GSM?
